171 First lesson(2)

Nick didn't argue but took out his quill and notebook to copy down this information as while it wasn't super important it was pure gold for his organic smithing experiments. He had been troubled by how different pieces of wood always seemed to have different resistances to different enchantments. Sure he had not actually had a successful case of enchanting a wooden ring beyond the magical grenade he kept in Greed but his experiments showed that like animal parts wood also had affinities. Olivander then left the storage room and entered the workshop that was very different then Nick's as most of the tools within it were meant for wood working instead of metal.-

"This piece of wood is large enough for me to create two housings for wands out of it so watch carefully." Olivander said seriously as he approached the workbench and grabbed a draw knife meant to strip away bark from trees. Using the tool the old man meticulously stripped away the bad parts of the wood's exterior. He the grabbed a small blade with a strange spoon like look and carefully began to peel off slivers of wood from the center of the wooden block.-

Soon he had a smooth U shaped furrow in the center of the block at which time he grabbed a nearby axe and hammer. Lining the axe in the dead center of that furrow he hit the back of the axe head with the hammer splitting the wood in half neatly. He then set aside one half of the wood and grabbed a box planer and got to work removing excess material from the wood. Once it was perfectly sized he then took sand paper to it to shape it into a wand shape while smoothing the wood at the same time.-

Soon there was a wand shaped object ready on the workbench at which time Olivander finally spoke. "All of this work is necessary to ensure the minimum amount of my own magic possible enters the wood during the process. If I were to use magic to speed up the process then the core may reject the wood as it would bear my magical signature." he said seriously. Nick made sure to write down this entire process from his point of view as well as what olivander was saying.-

"Next I'll split the wand housing and write the runes needed to turn it into a wand which unfortunately I can not allow you to see due to this specific combination being researched by my family over many years." Olivander said apologetically. Nick shrugged "I don't mind since I am not here to steal your families secrets , but I can watch you split the wood and place the core correct?" he asked for confirmation. Olivander nodded "Yes those are key parts of the process so not being about to witness them is not a problem as the runes will have been hidden by then." he said calmly before splitting the wand with a spell and having Nick leave the room.-

A few minutes later Olivander call Nick back into the room but no matter how hard he looked he couldn't see any magical runes despite their presence showing up in his magical senses. "My family designed this string of runes to integrate seamlessly into the wood so there are no actual runes visible if someone were to split the wand again. Now watch closely how I place the core into the housing as it is the same no matter what you use as a core." the old man said and Nick watched very closely.-

Olivander carefully took the core out of the split old wand which was a white braid of a few hairs and placed it into the center of the new wand right down the center before he canceled the splitting spell he used causing the wand to fully enclose the hairs. Sparks instantly shot out of the tip startling Nick but Olivander merely chuckled at his reaction. "That is merely the wand getting rid of my magical signature that had entered the wand during this time , perfectly normal I assure you." he explained and Nick marveled at it as an inanimate object actively chose to reject someone's magic.-

This was a huge deal as it showed that in fact it is common for magical objects to have a form of pseudo sapience if the craft is advanced enough. "Don't go making the mistake of thinking that all wands are like this upon creation as in fact it is only after finding a master that they become like this as their masters magic nourishes them and grows alongside them. To this day no one knows why this is , merely that it is." Olivander explained correcting Nick before his incorrect thoughts could take root.
