22 Public Outcry

In the determined gaze of the young Harry, Dumbledore sensed an unwavering resolve. He marveled at the depth of the boy's understanding of both magical and Muggle law, considering he had only recently discovered the existence of magic.

"I'll see what I can do. At least I'll go to Azkaban and hear Sirius out," Dumbledore promised.

Harry, however, made it clear that he would not passively accept the situation. "That's a start. Don't make any mistake. Things in my life have been so messed up that I won't hesitate to see my interests properly represented. I'm used to deciding on my own. I'll accept advice; it would be foolish not to use the experience of those older than me, but I've learned to only truly trust myself."

He expressed skepticism toward authority figures, having experienced a lack of assistance when needed. "I take everything I learn with a grain of salt until I can ascertain new information. It served me well. The only thing I'll accept is a fair trial for Sirius Black to hear with my own ears that he did or didn't do it."

Harry then outlined his plan, stating that if he didn't see the trial within three months, he would bring the matter to the attention of the Prime Minister. Dumbledore questioned whether Harry believed he could force the Ministry of Magic to act.

"I indeed do. Did you forget that I'm the most famous wizard alive? People fell over themselves to do your bidding, Professor Dumbledore. If I told the public about my doubts and that I only want our Ministry to give my godfather a fair trial, don't you think people would riot?" Harry asked with a calculating look.

Dumbledore, taken aback by the extent of Harry's determination and strategic thinking, questioned, "You would really go that far, Harry?"

"I indeed would. I'm a firm believer in upholding the law for everybody. And every politician fears how he looks in the eyes of the public. Massive negative press leads to the loss of political clout," Harry declared, revealing a shrewd understanding of the power dynamics at play.

Dumbledore, though concerned about the path Harry seemed willing to tread, couldn't deny the truth in the young wizard's words. Harry, with his newfound knowledge and tenacity, stood ready to navigate the complexities of the wizarding world and demand justice for his godfather.

"The only thing they will have to do is give Sirius, and while we're at it, everybody who perhaps also didn't get a trial after the war, said trial. Nothing more. It shouldn't even be an issue at all," Harry declared, settling the matter with determined conviction. Shifting effortlessly, he redirected the conversation, questioning the reliance on a single person as the Secret Keeper.

Dumbledore, still taken aback by the notion of a deception, responded, "Yes, well, there was one other very good friend of your father, Remus Lupin. But due to a certain condition he has, he hasn't been allowed to take care of you."

As Dumbledore proceeded to share the tragic fate of Alice and Frank Longbottom, Harry expressed genuine shock. "That's horrible. What happened to Neville?"

Dumbledore explained, "His grandmother raised him. But with all the people that your parents trusted not being available to take care of you, well, you see the problems."

Concerned about Remus Lupin's condition, Harry inquired, "What kind of condition prevents Remus Lupin from taking care of me?"

"He was bitten by a werewolf when he was a child. Therefore, the Ministry classifies him as a dark creature. He is a very nice man and was a loyal friend to your parents, but with him transforming once a month into a beast, nobody would have allowed for you to grow up with him," Dumbledore clarified.

Harry, considering the situation, remarked, "Hm, I don't see the problem if that is only an issue for one day a month. I mean, he is human twenty-seven days of twenty-eight each month. Only the full moon transforms him, and I don't think my dad would have been his friend if he was dangerous to others during that time. I would rather think there were precautions taken."

Harry's contemplation shifted to the potential exposure of the magical world to Muggles. "Otherwise, the Muggles would have found out already about the magical world. People turning into werewolves are only part of horror stories," he mused.

Dumbledore smiled at Harry's astuteness. "I'm very happy you can see the difference. Most witches and wizards can't and only see the beast."

Harry didn't mince words, expressing his frustration. "Stupid idiots; does the whole wizarding world lack common sense?"

Dumbledore chuckled. "Sometimes it seems like that. Well, for the rest of the holidays until school starts, I think it would be best if you were able to learn more about the wizarding world. I guess with your love for reading, you would like to get a few more books as well."

He continued, proposing a plan for Harry to stay at the Leaky Cauldron, with Hagrid guiding him through Diagon Alley to familiarize himself with the magical world. Harry agreed, seeing the opportunity for exploration.

Then, Harry brought up a critical question about school choice and the possibility of changing if issues arose. Dumbledore knew this was a pivotal moment. Harry, though having accepted Dumbledore's apology, remained cautious and mistrustful. The Sirius Black case cast a shadow on the British magical government.

Dumbledore considered his response carefully. "In the magical world, it is indeed possible to transfer schools if circumstances require it. However, it is not a common occurrence, and such decisions are usually made after careful consideration."

"I assure you, Harry, your education and well-being are of utmost importance, and we will ensure you have the support you need. As for the changes you wish to see in the British wizarding world, your voice can be a catalyst for transformation. Hogwarts, if you choose to attend, can be a place to learn and, perhaps, instigate positive change."
