107 Chapter 107 - Messing with potions

"As Thomas said, the potion allows us to transform into somebody else. Think about it! We could change into four or three of the Slytherins since Thomas can become invisible with his spell. And if we managed to brew the potion, no one would know it was us. Malfoy would probably tell us anything. He's probably boasting about it in the Slytherin common room right now if only we could hear him."

"This Polyjuice stuff sounds a bit dodgy to me," Ron argued back while frowning. "What if we were stuck looking like the Slytherins forever?"

"It wears off after a while," Hermione responded coldly, waving her hand impatiently. "But getting hold of the recipe will be very difficult. Snape said it was in a book called Moste Potente Potions and it's bound to be in the Restricted Section of the library."

There was only one way to get out a book from the Restricted Section: You needed a signed note of permission from a teacher, which frankly was easier said than done, unless…

"Hard to see why we'd want the book if we weren't going to try and make one of the potions."

Not minding Ron's words, Hermione turned to Thomas, who was thinking about their various means of getting their hands on that book. She knew he was the only one who had a chance of getting a pass from a teacher since he was more than good at charms and potions.

"Thomas, do you think you could ask Snape or Flitwick for a pass to get the book? You're one of their best students, they might trust you enough to let you borrow it for a while. Please, Thomas, this is our only chance to find out if Malfoy is the heir, and if so, we need to stop him before it's too late." She clasped her hands together and looked at him with pleading eyes. "Please, Thomas, will you help us?"

Thomas rolled his eyes at Hermione's attempt of swaying him into helping them break into the Slytherin common room. He knew she was right, that they had to find out the truth about Malfoy, but he also knew that it was a very risky and dangerous plan. Mostly because compared to what he and his roommates did last year, this time they would actively seek Malfoy and try to talk with him, which could go in any direction. Not to mention that he wasn't all that keen on asking Snape or Flitwick for a pass, mostly because he was sure they would be suspicious and ask him why he wanted it. And while he was curious about some potions that are deemed impossible to make due to some of the ingredients being extinct, he was quite sure that Sera would be able to get him some of them for the right price of course.

"Alright, Hermione, I'll do it. I'll try to get the book for you. But you have to promise me that we'll only make the Polyjuice and nothing else. And I hope to God, I won't have to mention that I will follow you three from under my invisibility spell. Deal?"

Hearing her friend, Hermione smiled. "Deal."

The next day, after his transfiguration class, Thomas went to Snape's office, hoping to catch him before he left for his lunch break. As soon as he reached the office, he knocked on the door and waited for a response. Thankfully it didn't take him long before he heard a gruff voice saying, "Enter."

Not wanting to make the potion master wait, Thomas opened the door and saw Snape sitting at his desk, surrounded by a metric ton of papers. Seeing that Thomas gave a short prayer to god before approaching his professor. Snape looked up and frowned when he saw Thomas, not expecting to see his troublemaker of a student come to him the first thing after the first class.

"What do you want, Grayson? I don't recall having any training with you today."

This isn't good, thought Thomas as he cleared his throat and tried to sound confident, but still, that will not work that well against the potion master, no matter who was speaking with him. "Professor Snape, I'm sorry to disturb you, but I have a favor to ask you. I'm working on a project, a personal project, and I need a book from the restricted section of the library. It's called Moste Potente Potions, and it has some recipes that I'm interested in studying. I was wondering if you could give me a pass to get it, just for a few days. I promise I'll return it as soon as possible."

Snape raised an eyebrow and looked at Thomas with suspicion, not liking even one bit what he was hearing., "A personal project, you say? And what kind of project is that? What potions are you planning to make?"

"About that sir… I don't know if the school has learned about this, but when I showed my first magical abilities, I was at a zoo and because of that, when my magic become uncontrollable, I unconsciously shattered all of the glass in the area around me, almost killing my parents. While both of the escaped with their livers, my mother suffered quite a nasty injury leaving her mute for life. Even if this might sound selfish, I want to try my hands at making the famous and almost impossible phoenix tear."

Snape listened to Thomas's story and could sympathize with the boy more than he could ever think, after all, he knew what it was like to lose someone you loved, and he knew better than anyone how desperate one could be to bring them back. Nevertheless, what Thomas wanted to make was just a fool's dream for a normal potion maker. Even he had once, long ago, but he had failed.

"The phoenix tear…that's a very ambitious potion, Thomas. It requires not only skill and patience but also a very rare and dangerous ingredient. A drop of blood from a virgin female of the Phenex family, which from what we know has all died long ago. Then again, while the ministry tries to keep anything related to the other factions hidden from the wizard folk, it could be quite easy to get some information if the right price is paid. I take it you plan to make a deal with the Phenex clan for a drop of virgin blood."

Snape's words caught Thomas off guard, mostly because he didn't expect the phoenix tear to require such an ingredient. However, Snape was right. If needed, Thomas would use everything he had in the underworld to make a deal with the Phenex clan, even if that means using Sera's influence, not that she would mind if that would make her Tommy happy.

"Precisely professor. If I do manage to get my hands on the book, I will use everything at my disposal to brew that potion."

"Even if that means selling your life to the devils?"

"Even if that means I will have to live the rest of my life as a pawn for some devil. My family and friends are more important to me than my life."

"A fool, Grayson. You are one of the biggest fools I ever seen, but perhaps that is what it would take to brew the potion."

Even though he said that Snape still reached into his desk and pulled out a pass before handing it to Thomas. "But I can see that you are determined to do this, no matter what I say. So, I will give you this pass to get the book from the library. But only for three days. And you have to promise me that you will be careful and that you will never sadden your mother. She has already suffered enough because of your magic. Don't make her suffer more because of your foolishness."

After getting the pass, Thomas didn't waste any more time and rushed to the library, clutching the pass in his hand. He hoped that no one would notice him or stop him on his way. As soon as he reached the library, he headed straight to the Restricted Section, where he showed the pass to Madam Pince.

The woman looked at him with a stern and suspicious gaze, but she let him in after checking the pass. The moment he was given the green light, Thomas scanned the shelves for the book he wanted, hoping that it was not already taken by someone else, and after a few good minutes of searching every nook and cranny, he spotted a thick and dusty tome with a dark green cover and gold lettering. Seeing the book, he was searching for, Thomas quickly grabbed it before checking it out, ignoring Madam Pince's warning to return it on time and in good condition.

Once he had the book in his hands, he then went to the corner of the library where Harry, Ron, Hermione, Daphne, Tracey, Michael, Adam, and James were waiting for him.

"I did it. I got the book. Here it is. Moste Potente Potions."

As soon as they heard him, they crowded around him and tried to get a glimpse of the book's contents. Hermione was especially eager to see it, as she was the one who had suggested using Polyjuice Potion in the first place. "Let me see it, Thomas. Let me see how to make Polyjuice Potion."

Thought that still didn't stop Ron from commenting on Daphne and Tracey being here, mostly because of what they were going to do. "I still think this is a bad idea. I mean no offense to you two but you are Slytherins."

Thomas almost intervened when out of nowhere, James, who for some strange reason was quiet, lashed out at the second youngest Weasley.

"What do you mean by that, Weasley? Are you implying that they are not trustworthy?"

"Well, yeah. Kind of. I mean, come on. You're Slytherins. You're supposed to be cunning and ambitious and ruthless. You're supposed to value blood purity and power and glory. You're supposed to hate us, the impure houses as some of you call us."

Tracey hid behind her friend, while Daphne was ready to throw hands at this idiot for saying such things. "How dare you judge us based on our house? If you have something to say, say it clear, Weasley!"

Letting out a sigh, Thoams decided to defuse this before it would end up in a fistfight between James and Ron, and there was no way in hell the Gryffindor redhead would be able to beat James.

"Guys, guys, calm down. This is not the time or the place to argue. We have a bigger problem to deal with. And Ron for the love Godric Gryffindor's saggy balls, can you please understand for once that not all Slytherins are plain Malfoys? Just like not all Ravenclaws are bookworms or how not all Gryffindors are brave."

Ron rolled his eyes and turned away from them. "Fine, fine. Whatever. "After saying that, he crossed his arms and looked at the bookshelf, trying to ignore Daphne and Tracey's glares.

Meanwhile, Hermione was somewhat oblivious to what was happening. "Here it is," She yelled excitedly as she found the page headed The Polyjuice Potion. It was decorated with drawings of people halfway through transforming into other people.

"This is the most complicated potion I've ever seen," Hermione continued as all of them turned and look at the book. "Lacewing flies, leeches, fluxweed, and knotgrass," Hermione murmured, running her finger down the list of ingredients. "Well, they're easy enough, they're in the student store cupboard, we can help ourselves… Oooh, look, a powdered horn of a bicorn … don't know where we're going to get that … shredded skin of a boomslang … that'll be tricky, too … and of course a bit of whomever we want to change into."

"Excuse me?" Ron yelled out at her. "What d'you mean, a bit of whomever we're changing into? I'm drinking nothing with Crabbe's toenails in it and that's final."

Before Hermione could say anything, Adam spoke out. "You won't have to, Ron. Harry, Michael, and I will transform while Thomas, and James will be invisible following us and at the same time we will have Daphne covering us from within the common room. While you, Hermione, and Tracey will wait for us in the library."
