1 Chapter 1

I stared down at the screen for what was probably the tenth time in the last five minutes. It wasn't as if I needed to, there wasn't anything complex or particularly detailed on my phone screen, but I wished it was. Instead, it was just a single message, not too long and straight to the point.

'I'm sorry but I don't think it's going to work, you're just not my type and if I'm being honest your face could do with some work.'

It stung bad, especially since she'd never even shown any signs of dislike at all. I'd thought things were going well and for the first time in a long time, I'd allowed myself to think that maybe, just maybe I had a chance, that I wouldn't remain a virgin for the rest of my life and without a girlfriend. Once again, my hopes had been dashed, or more like battered in this case.

I placed my phone down and leaned back in my bed. I'd have to get up in a few hours to go to work at the firm, but until then I could wallow in my self-pity and sadness like I seemed to be doing more and more as of late. My bedroom was quite small just like the rest of my apartment. I didn't make much money and this was the best I could do. I'd lived with my parents before, but after they'd passed I'd had to move out as it turned out my parents hadn't made a will and the house I'd lived in for all my life had gone up for sale, leaving me to find a shitty one-bedroom apartment downtown.

It was going to be so damn awkward tomorrow. Sarah and I worked at the same place and no doubt everybody would know we'd broken up by tomorrow, and not even a month into the relationship. I didn't care about the stares I'd get, but the comments and laughs? That wouldn't go over so nicely, and I couldn't afford to make a fuss as I was lucky to have this job in all honesty. I'd been given it by chance and chance alone, not that I couldn't do it well, but it wasn't one of those jobs that required an especially skilled person to do. Anybody could do It and I knew I could be replaced at a moment's notice.

Just as I was about to drift off to sleep and get the only slice of serenity I had in the pie that was life, a bright light shone through my small bedroom window. At first, I tried to ignore it, but its luminosity continued to increase until my entire room was lit up with blue and white light which was odd in and of itself since the lamp outside shone orange not blue and white. Frowning, I got to my feet and walked over to the window. Almost immediately I had to raise a hand as the light shone into my eye and turned my vision white.

I tried to get a small look in or peek at what it was, but every time I moved my hand away, the light would shine into my eyes and I'd be momentarily blinded. It also seemed as though the light was getting brighter, which was shocking since my room was brighter than it had ever been. I could see bits of specks of dust and other dirty things that I'd never been able to spot before.

Just as I was about to move to close the curtain in hopes of blocking the light, I heard an odd whistling sound that seemed to be getting louder.

"What the…"

My words of confusion were cut off as I heard a loud shattering sound moments before a weight, unlike anything I'd ever felt before crashed into me. I gasped, but what was strange was that it didn't push back. I opened my eyes and looked down to see the white and blue light had coalesced into a glowing mass that was now covering my body. I opened my mouth to scream, but I never got the chance as glowing light flooded into my body.

Heat, unlike anything I'd ever felt bloomed in my chest and quickly spread throughout my body as my skin began to tingle. I could only stare in horror, unable to scream as this thing, took me over? killed me?

My mind was unable to stay on one thought for long as the heat rose and rose along with the tingling feeling until it felt like my entire body was electrified. Just as quickly as the heat had come, it turned to an icy cold that set my body frigid and my muscles locking into place. The tingling continued, but the feeling grew fainter and fainter as my eye began to shut.

I tried to move, to gasp, to scream, to do anything, but I couldn't.

Was this how I was going to die? Taken by this thing? I'd never even had a girlfriend or lost my virginity. I'd never got to live out any of my dreams, and even if I hated my job and current life, I didn't want to die. I tried to struggle once more giving it every ounce of strength I had, but it was fruitless. My scrawny body wasn't strong enough, and I had little muscles to speak of. I was weak and unable to do a damn thing.

The last thing I saw before my eye shut and the world went black, was a swirling vortex of blue and white.
