“So he didn’t tell ‘em that part of it?” Mazie asked.

“No, just that Adrienne was engaged. He felt it was up to her to tell it all.”

“Or that he was chicken to do it for her,” Mazie said.

“Maze, that doesn’t help.”

She reached out and put a hand on his knee. “You’re right, it doesn’t. I’m sorry. But why should it make you worry. It just might mean he’s not ready to say anything to his family just yet. It don’t change anything between the two of you.”

“I know. But I can’t shake the feeling that he’s come to an impasse. I know he doesn’t want to have to choose between me and his family. But he’s said so often that keeping this a secret isn’t fair to me. Maybe he’s decided that this isn’t going to work because he can’t make that choice and wants to set me free—like he feels he’s holding me back from a full life. He’s said stuff like that before.”

“And what have you always said to him when he talks like that?” Mazie prompted.
