18 Chapter 18

Ushijima delivered a powerful serve yet again. This time, Hinata was prepared. He got his hands under the ball and sent it up beautifully. Semi didn't think he would have been able to do that. Semi, still in disbelief over that perfect receive, set the ball a bit too close to the net.

Hinata jumped to spike it, and Shirabu moved to block. Hinata had no problem hitting that difficult set and spiked it straight down, right next to Shirabu's position. [ 6 - 8 ]

"How did you get that!?" Semi exclaimed.

"I'm good with my receives. I just needed to get used to the power and spin."

It was Semi's serve again. He tossed the ball into the air, and slammed it in the spot between Shirabu and Ushijima. They didn't manage to get it in time, and the ball hit the floor. [ 6 - 9 ]

"Service Ace!" Tendō screamed from the side.

"Nice serve." Hinata said with a smile. Semi found himself smiling too. Today's match was feeling like a breath of fresh air, instead of the hell he thought it would be. He was having fun.

Semi served again, and Shirabu dived to get it. He managed to bump it up, but the receive was off. Ushijima managed to set the ball and Shirabu jumped to spike, only to get shut down by Hinata. [ 6 - 10 ]

Shirabu gritted his teeth. This match wasn't the walk in the park he had expected it to be, and he didn't know how to deal with that shorty. Ushijima could handle him, but for that.. he'd have to get the ball to him first.. and that was turning out to be anything but easy.

Semi tossed the ball up and tried to deliver it in another tough spot, but he hit it a bit too hard and the ball landed outside. [ 7 - 10 ]

"Don't mind!" Hinata called and Semi got back into position.

Shirabu served the ball and Semi bumped it up. Hinata set the ball beautifully for Semi, but the setter was blocked by Ushijima. [ 8 - 10 ]

Shirabu served again, and sent the ball towards Hinata, who had no problem receiving it. The ball went up and semi got under it to set it for Hinata. He didn't underestimate Hinata this time, and set the ball beautifully for him. Hinata jumped to spike it, just as Ushijima jumped for the block.

The block didn't happen. Hinata spiked the ball, and it landed outside after hitting Ushijima's hand. Hinata got a blockout. [ 8 - 11 ]

It was now Hinata's serve. He did another jump floater serve, and sent the ball towards Shirabu. Shirabu tried to get it up, and failed miserably. [ 8 - 12 ]

Hinata went back to serve again. Their opponents got ready too, expecting another jump floater serve. He tossed the ball high into the air, and began his run-up. Hinata jumped and hit the ball, sending it in the spot between Shirabu and Ushijima. Except, it wasn't a floater.

Shirabu's eyes widened as soon as he realised it. The ball slammed into the floor, before he could make any movement. It was another service ace. [ 8 - 13 ]

The entire gym went silent yet again. People were staring at the middle schooler with an open mouth. Just who the hell was this kid? Were middle schoolers this crazy nowadays?

Semi picked his jaw off the floor and rushed towards Hinata. "Damn.. that was amazing! I certainly understand why they say you have some nasty serves. I can't believe you're still in middle school."

"I won't be for long." Hinata just laughed and went to serve again.

He hit another jump serve, and sent it towards Shirabu. The setter couldn't get it up and the ball went out of the court. It was Hinata's sixth service ace of the day. [ 8 - 14 ]

His next serve wasn't quite on target and landed an inch outside the line. Shirabu sighed in relief. It would be Ushijima's serve next, and he could take a much needed break. They'd been targeting him a lot.

Ushijima tossed the ball up and delivered a powerful serve. Semi dived to get the ball, but it hit the floor before he could even get under it. [9-14]

Semi was certain that this wouldn't be the only serve that was sent towards him, and he was right. The next four serves were sent towards him, but he couldn't get any of them up. The spin on it made it even more difficult. It score was now [ 13 - 14 ]

Shirabu saw Hinata go up to Semi and whisper something to him, and the older setter nodded.

Ushijima tossed the ball up once again, but just as he was about to hit it, Semi started moving back. Ushijima hit the serve towards Semi once again, but Hinata rushed in front of Semi and intercepted it. He got of balance and took a knee, but the ball went up. Semi got under it and set the ball for Hinata, but getting off balance had upset his timing. He jumped to spike and Ushijima was already there with a higher block.

Hinata hit the ball up, instead of hitting it downwards. He hit a wipe shot. The ball hit Ushijima's hand and flew outside the court, earning his team the point. [ 13 - 15 ]

"Nice shot! I thought you were going to get blocked! I didn't know you could hit a wipe shot."

"Yaa.. but that serve was as nasty as ever. It completely knocked me off balance. I barely managed to get it up."

"That's already good enough. I couldn't get it up at all. They scored 5 points off of it alone."

"You would've been able to get it the next time. You were getting the hang of it. It's that damn spin that makes it so effective and difficult to receive."

Semi just nodded and went to serve. He sent it towards Shirabu, who managed to get it up. Ushijima set the ball and Shirabu spiked, but Semi was able to get a 'one touch'.

Hinata got the ball up and passed it to Semi. Semi got under it to set, but noticed that Hinata had started to run.

'A quick!?' They hadn't talked about it before and Semi knew Hinata was just trying something new. He trusted Semi to be able to sync up with him.

Hinata jumped and Semi tossed the ball towards him. Their opponents were taken by surprise and couldn't react fast enough.

*Baam* Hinata spiked the ball and it slammed into the floor. [ 13 - 16 ]

"A quick! That shrimp can do quicks too! That was fast!" Tendō said excitedly.

Semi and Hinata high-fived.

"Damn.. I didn't expect you to suddenly do a quick out of nowhere. At least tell me before attempting it. But still.. that was pretty incredible!"

"I admit that was pretty impulsive. I just trusted that you'd be able to pull it off. It certainly did it's job and threw them of guard. That was a really good toss."

Semi nodded with a smile. He was having a blast.

He went to serve and sent the ball towards Shirabu once again, but it was intercepted by Ushijima before the setter could get it up. The ball went up and Shirabu set the ball high for Ushijima. Ushijima jumped to spike it and Hinata jumped to block.

Ushijima hit a cross shot towards Semi with an intense force behind it. It landed in front of Semi, and ricocheted off the surface, to land on the 2nd floor. [14 - 16]

Semi didn't even get enough time to move. He saw his life flash before his eyes. A few inches closer, and the ball would've hit his head instead.

Hinata gave him a sympathetic smile. He'd thought of something and went to talk to Semi.

"I've thought of a way to deal with Ushijima's spike for the moment. You jump to block his cross shot, and leave his straight wide open. I'll be there to receive it. Okay?"

Semi nodded his head. It was a pretty good idea, but it would depend on Hinata being able to receive Ushijima's spike head on.

Shirabu served and Semi bumped it up. Hinata set the ball and Semi spiked. Shirabu managed to get a touch on it and Ushijima was there to receive the ball. Shirabu jumped to get the ball, and set it nicely for Ushijima.

Semi immediately got into action. Just as planned, he blocked Ushijima's cross shot and left the straight open, where Hinata quickly got into position.

*Baam* Ushijima sipked the ball hard and sent it towards Hinata. The ball slammed into his hands with a vicious force and knocked Hinata over, but he was able to get it up into the air.

Hinata rolled back to feet, and made his approach. Semi was still a bit dazed, but was able to set it cleanly for Hinata. He pushed off the floor with a 'Bang' and jumped high. Shirabu jumped to block but he didn't stand a chance.

*Baam*

Hinata spiked the ball hard, and it blasted through Shirabu's block.. slamming onto the floor.

The entire gym was silent again. They just looked at the orange haired boy, with varying reactions. Some just looked with shock and disbelief, and the others in awe. There was a big difference between receiving Ushijima's spike and his serves. He had done it before, but doing it again proved that it had nothing to do with luck.

Semi snapped out of his daze and smiled widely. This time, Shirabu wasn't the only one with a monster on his team.
