37 Weirdo

POV: Marshal

I was appointed assistant commander at the Jaeger base in Alaska. There were quite a few such bases throughout the Pacific region. This base was responsible for protecting the coast of the North American continent. It had just been built and was rapidly expanding, increasing the number of Jaegers based here.

Together with the base, a state-of-the-art factory for the production of Jaegers and their repair was built here. All necessary parts were imported here, but the main work was done here. The first double drift Jaeger has just left the factory.

All management of the base actually fell into my hands, since the commander of this base was a simple politician and was mainly responsible for the budget and relations with the government. It took me more than a month to familiarize myself with everything on the base. There was not only a factory, but also a training complex for training pilots and a laboratory in which scientists studied the Kaiju and made improvements to the Jaegers.

Our base received a report about the appearance of strange plants near the island of Torterra, and we sent some of our scientists there for research. The results were interesting. I haven't covered the possibility of Kaiju blood being used as rocket fuel yet because we didn't have much blood, but based on the results of plant research, they could produce blue toxin in small amounts.

I recommended to preserve these new species of plants and study the technology of their breeding on an industrial scale. Scientists were puzzled by this task, because they did not understand why they needed to grow toxic plants. When I find scientists I can trust, I will be able to unravel this mystery, but for now there is no need to do so.

After some time, another message came that someone had blown up Torterra again with a nuclear bomb. I wanted to go to see him, but they didn't let me, they said that if he thought that I didn't like his drawings, then he wouldn't be happy to see me. It's very funny in my opinion, but if he's okay, then I have nothing to worry about.

It's amazing that he can survive a nuclear bomb blast. Its very origin is amazing. He is like the embodiment of nature itself, and wherever he is, everything around him grows and blooms. Because of him, even plants adapted to the toxicity of Kaiju blood. His death will be an irreparable loss to humanity.

The investigation showed that it was something similar to the explosion of a nuclear bomb, but it was not one. Something strange happened there, but scientists could not find out what. I think I will ask him when I can meet him.

We were ordered to send a Jaeger there to take care of the plants and prevent them from spreading. I immediately ordered to remove all weapons from the robot. The maintenance problem could be solved by building a small support base on the island itself. Management wasn't sure that Torterra would allow this to happen, but I assured them that everything would be fine. They don't know that he understands everything perfectly, and I wondered how he would react.

I was not disappointed with what I saw. Torterra had those rookie pilots clean up his island. That said a lot about him. He will be easy to work with and protect humanity. I was once again convinced how lucky we were with him.

After a few months, a man came to me. According to the management, he gave all his money to the Yeheriv project only under one condition. And the management instructed me to help him try to fulfill his wish. A strange man in my opinion, but I was not against his request. If he succeeds, it will help us a lot in the future.

The problem was that Torterra had moved out of our observation area and was somewhere in the Indian Ocean. This is the first time he left our region. I could only hope he was just traveling. The opening of other portals will be a disaster for humanity, which has barely managed to recover from crises.

POV: Torterra

After the appearance of the Jaegers with two pilots, humanity was able to successfully fight the Kaiju. This gave me the opportunity to travel the world in search of sources of radiation. But it was not as easy as it seemed at the beginning. There are a bit such places in the world. I mean the illegal disposal of radioactive waste.

Months passed, and during that time I found only one such place. I was able to absorb it faster than the previous one, but it still took me over a month. I tried to somehow control this process. All I could do was just focus on it. Not sure if it was my efforts somehow speeding up the process or if it was because I got bigger myself.

I searched only in the oceans, without going on land. The reason was quite simple. There are so many people that by the time you go where you need to go, you will destroy a lot of buildings. Maybe that's not enough of a reason, but it's still 8 years before two Kaiju come out of the portal. Therefore, as long as i find illegal dumps of radioactive waste in the ocean, I don't need to go on land.

After a year of traveling on the bottom of the oceans, I wanted to test one theory. I wondered if I could turn the desert into a green oasis. If plants can adapt to toxins, then they can adapt to the desert.

I swam into the Mediterranean Sea and kept to the southern shore. When I swam here, I was immediately surrounded by ships and helicopters. It wasn't American military anymore, but I wasn't worried. I do not think that their behavior will be any different.

Having found a suitable shore, I left the sea and headed in the direction of the desert. I don't know where exactly I am, but apart from the sand I saw nothing around. It was the perfect place to experiment, so I gathered all my strength and started working hard. I cleared a small area around me, making the surface of the sand even, and lay down there to sleep.

I didn't have time to doze off for a long time, when a bright red light flashed near my eyes. Opening my eyes, I saw a bearded man in a suit standing in front of me. He held a signal pistol in his right hand, and a tablet in his left.

"How did he end up here?" I thought, looking around. Far, far away from us I noticed a helicopter parked on the sand. This man walked all the way from the helicopter for a surprise appearance. "Very interesting!" I just watched him without moving. This eccentric man wanted something from me, and I really began to wonder what he wanted.

Seeing that I was no longer asleep, the man took out some device from his pocket and pressed a button on it. The device lit up and began to project some kind of image onto the sand in front of Torterra. It was late in the evening, so the image on the sand was clearly visible.

The images were constantly changing, but they were all about water. Oceans, seas, waterfalls, just drops of water - all these images quickly replaced each other. The man shouted the word "Water" and made some gestures with his hands.

I stared at this man with wide-eyed shock. How much of a weirdo do you have to be to come up to an almost 100-meter-tall creature yourself and try to teach it sign language?

The man continued to show different pictures and name simple words like earth, tree, fish, etc. He paused after each word and looked at me with hope in his eyes. I liked this bearded man, so I decided to play a joke on him. He continued to teach me sign language, but I didn't move and just watched him. This went on for quite some time, and I saw how his facial expression changed from happy to depressed.

He tried to teach the beast to talk, and everything he did was just his guess and dream. If this was a regular Monsterverse Titan, he wouldn't be able to teach anything (except Kong). Of course, ordinary Titans do not build themselves buildings from bricks and do not communicate with other primitive gestures and hints.

When the man was completely depressed by the failure of his project, he tried to invent another way to communicate. He walked up to Torterra and touched him. Then he turned off the stationary device and waved his arms even harder and said the words from his lesson. "Come on, kid! You can do it! It's not hard," he would say, trying to encourage me to study.

My poker face hasn't changed. On the outside I didn't even blink, but on the inside I was having fun. It was a great opportunity to break the language barrier and I didn't have to make up any lies to justify my knowledge.

Over time, the man completely gave up and sat down on the sand with his head down. At that moment, I felt somehow bad that I had brought this man to such a state. I don't know why he's so stubborn or why it's so important to him, but it looks like it's time to end this joke.

I slowly got up from my lying position and sat on the sand dune. Sand poured from me, and the dune diverged from my weight, resembling water. The man covered his face with his hands so that the sand would not get into his eyes. I gave him a stern look, and when everything around me calmed down, I said the word "Water" using sign language.

The bearded man's face immediately cleared, and he began to weep with joy. His dream was a reality, he had given almost all of his wealth to be allowed to approach Torterra, and only now was the burden of doubt lifted from him.
