Chapter 3

After a few moments i hear the basement door open and out pops Riley's head. He looks around and his face lights up slightly when he sees me. I manage to stand and I walk over to riley, picking him up and walking back into the bunker. Emily rushes over the question clear in her eyes. I shake my head looking away. The tears began to roll as she knew exactly what my silence meant. Matt held her close as she cried. Kane began pacing again. Riley pulls on the sleeve of my hoodie causing me to wince again as the fabric rubs against the bandage. Emily looks at me and gasps. Looking down at my shoulder i can see that my wound had started to bleed through the hoodie. I head over to the first aid kit pulling off the hoodie I check the actual damage to my shoulder. The cut is deep but not life threatening. The gashes look jagged but they are pretty clean. Grabbing a bottle of water off the shelf, I pour it over the wound to clean it some more . The others stare at me in shock as i finish re-wrapping the wound with Emily covering Riley's eyes. When I'm done I turn back to the others. Leaning against the table I say " we should leave at dawn. That will give us enough time to get to the harbor while the sun is out." Emily looks at me worried ." what about your shoulder" she asks " shouldn't you rest". I shake my head. " the sooner we leave the higher our chances of survival." Matt sighs " once meg has made up her mind there is no changing it" he says shrugging his shoulders. Emily looks at him but says nothing. She knows that he is right. I nod pushing off of the table. " alright. We will stay down here for the night and tomorrow morning we set out for New port." They all nod but still look unsure. They are all tired and scared. I'm scared too but I know that if I break down ittl only make the whole situation worse. I take a deep breath to calm my mind. I have to be strong for the others. I head over to the supply closet and pull out the bed rolls father stored there. He had made this bunker before matt and i were born and when he and mom were still together. He was a doomsday strategist and was obsessed with the idea that one day a doomsday would come. We all called him crazy but now his obsession mad sense. You could never be sure when the worst would come. Placing the bed rolls on the floor i create a makeshift sleeping area for the night. Emily and matt push their bedrools together while kane moves his to the corner. Riley curls up in my lap. The room is completely silent. One after another they fall asleep leaving me alone with my thoughts . Eventually I doze off. After a few hours of sleep I woke up. Gently picking up Riley and lay him down on the bed roll. Stepping over emily and matt i head back up to the house. I go straight to my room after grabbing a large duffel bag. Throwing as many clothes as i can into the bag. I do the same to Matt's room grabbing clothes i know will fit both him and Kane. Finally i stop by riley' s room putting his clothes in a bag i grab a couple of his favorite toys to comfort him on our long trip. Grabbing my phone i look up the best way to get to Newport from our house in Manchester. My map app says it will take at least 2 and a half hours to get there meaning we will have plenty of time to find the boat and getting all of our stuff onboard. I go to the kitchen to grab some food before heading back down into the basement. Kane is already awake and is sitting in the corner. He nods at me when i walk in. he has dark circles under his eyes and I can tell this whole situation is getting to him. Handing him an Eggo waffle I go check on riley. gently shaking him awake. He sits up rubbing his eyes sleepily. I hand him a waffle as well before going to wake matt and Emily. When everyone is awake and has eating we grab the bedrolls and some of the emergency food and head back upstairs. While matt and Kane put the duffel bags of clothing into the van Emily, Riley and I grab as much food as we can into the two cooler that we had. Once everything is in the car and everyone is buckled in iI start the car and pull out of the driveway for what could be the last time.
