1 Half Life

"Damn! What the hell is this pain in my forehead?"

As soon as he woke up there was a severe pain in between his eyes. It took him at least ten minutes to properly open his eyes and another ten minutes to properly adjust his eyesight to realize what was in front of him.

"What? Where is this?"

As soon as his eyes opened, all he saw was thick cover of plants and trees all around him. As far as his eyes could see there was greenery in front of him. Not just any simple greenery, but greenery like in the depth of Amazon Jungle of South America.

Looking at the unfamiliar conditions and environment that he was in, suddenly panic started to overtake his senses. His heart beat started to rise leading to increase in the blood pressure. His fingers started shaking, his breathing became unstable, but he could not care less.

The reason for that was his memories were coming back. Inside his mind, flashbacks of his most recent memories were hitting his forehead with the speed of a bullet train.

His name was 'June Rowe' and he was a scientist in the field of 'Physics'.

In fact, he could be considered one of the most brilliant minds alive on the planet. He was the youngest Nobel Prize winner for his research in the field of 'energy and mass conversion'. When he was twenty-two, he published the paper of his research on 'Quantum Conversion' which lead to all his achievements and all his success till date.

In very simple words his research was related to the speed of conversion of mass into energy and vice versa.

Most of the people who are not from the field of science do not know that mass and energy conversion is actually a very normal process that occurs all around us and even inside us all the time. We eat food and it gets converted into energy which we use to live our daily lives. But the thing is very tiny amount of mass is converted into energy so we normally ignore it.

For example, if you keep a stone of one kilogram in the open air and you check its mass after ten years, it will remain same but after a million years or so its mass will reduce. By how much that depends on the type of stone.

If you take one kilogram uranium in the place of stone, in one hundred and thirty eight days its weight will reduce by half that is five hundred grams.

This type of material which has very less half life is called radioactive material.

In simple words mass is like a soap in water, given enough time it will completely mix in the water never to be found again, but the thing is it happens very slowly. It happens so slow that it can take uncountable time for mass to change completely into energy.

Most people from the field of science called this concept 'Half Life'.

Every thing present in this world has a life. It does not matter if it's living thing or non living thing.

This concept is used to measure the age of fossils like dinosaur bones, prehistoric manuscripts, past civilizations, etc. Various archeologists are able to measure the date of archaeological remains with the help of this concept. They call this concept 'Carbon Dating', but it is actually just 'Half Life of carbon' or even simply time taken to convert half of carbon mass into energy.

Research of June was totally focused on how to increase and decrease the time taken for mass to convert into energy. His research was related to how a simple stone can be converted into a radioactive material or in other words how to increase or decrease its half life.

The method he used to achieve this was converting vibration into rotation. Normally atoms vibrate and rotate at the same time but when the vibration and rotation have the same starting and ending point, they start to resonate.

In simple words you hold a bottle half filled with water in your hand. When you start moving your hand left and right, the water in the bottle starts to shake and spill, but when you move the bottle left and right in a rhythmic flow, the water will start to rotate and flow in a circular motion. This is known as the resonance between rotation and vibration, because your hand is vibrating but the water in the bottle is rotating.

Now consider atom in the place of water.
