CHAPTER 16

Nolan adjusted his shirt then turned to Alina.

"Alina, don't forget you've not finished the report I gave you the other day" Nolan reminded out of the blue and Alina looked at her phone sadly.

"What happened? What's with the look on your face?" Nolan added pretentiously and Alina dropped her phone on the table.

"I guess, I will be working late again. Let's eat up professor. It's almost time for me to go check up on patients" Alina said and went back to her food.

"Working late sometimes is good for you because it gives you alone time to learn some things" Nolan said as he smiled in his head.

"I will try to finish up everything today. Don't worry professor, I will give you a feedback on the reports tomorrow morning. I will be diligent" Alina said with a smile and Nolan dropped his chopsticks mistakenly.

"You can take your time to finish it up tomorrow. I will be way too occupied to listen to your feedback in the morning so let's make it tomorrow in the evening" Nolan cut in sharply and Alina nodded.

"Okay professor" Alina concurred and Nolan exhaled sharply without her notice.

They were done eating then Nolan stood up.

"You can head to the car Alina. I will settle the bills" Nolan said.

"Professor I will also love to ..." She couldn't complete her statement when Nolan cut in placing his finger on her lips.

"What do you take me for? I took you out for breakfast so allow me. Maybe our next breakfast should be your treat" Nolan said with a smile then head to the counter where the waitress is.

Alina stared at him for some minutes then head out of the restaurant.

Nolan watched her leave.

She forgot to put her mask back on. Will she be fine alone? Nolan questioned in his head worriedly.

"Please make it quick" Nolan said to the waitress and she gave him his card and receipt.

Nolan ran out looking for Alina but couldn't find her at the parking lot or anywhere around his car.

He brought out his phone quickly from his pocket.

"Where could she have gone to?" Nolan questioned and placed the phone on his ears.

Alina wasn't taking her calls.

"Alina! Alina! Alina!" Nolan called out loudly as he looked around.

"Sir, please have you seen a young lady with a mask on and a nurse outfit?" Nolan asked the people passing by worriedly.

"Alina! Where are you?" Nolan called out worriedly as he walked around.

She possibly didn't go into another trauma attack right? That's not good. Nolan said in his head worriedly and ruffled his hair.

"Alina!" Nolan screamed.

People passing by looked at him.

"Professor" Alina whispered in his ears from behind and Nolan turned around quickly.

"Alina, are you okay? Nothing happened to you right?" Nolan asked worriedly as he checked her body looking out for any injuries.

"I'm fine. I only walked to the other side of the restaurant. They've got a beautiful resting spot at the back. Did I make you worried?" Alina asked innocently and Nolan smiled tiredly then patted her hair gently.

"You got me worried for a second but it's okay since you're alright. Let's go" Nolan said and held Alina's hand.

"I'm not going off again" Alina teased as she referred to Nolan's grip and he laughed.

"I had no idea I held your hand either" Nolan laughed and let go of her hand.

They both got into the car.

Nolan leaned forward and helped her put her mask on.

"No one has seen your bare face yet. It might be a bit awkward if you suddenly get to the hospital without your mask on" Nolan said and started the car.

"You're not going to ask me why I always have my mask on?" Alina questioned.

"You probably have your reasons and if it was that easy to let anyone know. You wouldn't be putting it on in the first place. I'm a bit curious but I guess I will have to find out with time. We've got a lot of time to figure things out so don't let it bother you okay" Nolan said calmly and Alina smiled.

"Thanks for the breakfast professor. I enjoyed it, it was quite delicious"

"Is that so? I'm glad you did. I've got history with that restaurant" Nolan said.

"History? What kind of history?" Alina asked curiously.

"I once fought with the owner of the restaurant. I couldn't believe my eyes that day. He threw me out of the restaurant like some piece of rag" Nolan narrated and Alina laughed hard.

"He threw you out of his restaurant?" Alina asked laughing hard and Nolan nodded.

"He threw me and I refused to leave. I rescheduled all my plans for the day and I ended up becoming friends with the owner. He had no idea, who he was messing with" Nolan said and Alina couldn't stop laughing.

She removed her mask so she could laugh out loud.

"It's hard to believe, professor. If someone had told me this, I wouldn't believe it" Alina laughed.

"It sounds funny right now but when it happened, I was boiling with rage. I felt like burning the restaurant to the ground"

"But what caused it? You don't look like the type who will go picking fights in a public place" Alina said and Nolan glanced at her for some seconds.

Her laughter suddenly sounds like melody in my ears. I never knew Alina has such a beautiful laugh. Nolan said in his head as his heartbeat raced.

"I picked a fight with him because he didn't prepare the dish I ordered for and I was way too famished to be reasoned with. Come to think of it, I was quite unreasonable that day" Nolan laughed.

They drove back to the hospital.

"Good luck on your shift" Nolan said politely as Alina got down from his car and she nodded.

She went into the hospital and head straight to the nurses table.

"Hello everyone" Alina greeted cheerfully but they all kept her quiet.

"Nurse Alina, the director wants you in his office now" One of the doctors reported and Alina nodded slowly a bit confused with the awkwardness in the room.

"Okay" Alina said and head to the director's office.

Alina got to the office and knocked.

"Come in" He said and she went inside.

"Greetings director" Alina greeted with a bow.

"I hate beating around the bush so I will go straight to the point" The director said calmly.

"I will appreciate that as well, director" Alina said.

"Nurse Alina, you haven't forgotten about the rule of Margolis hospital right?"

"Not at all director. I have it at the back of my head director but is anything the problem?" Alina asked anxiously.

"I arrived at the hospital minutes ago and I happened to eavesdrop on the nurses conversation. You know so well that hospital romance isn't allowed here right?" He asked.

Where's he going with this conversation? Did I happen to be in any relationship scandal but with who? I don't think I'm close enough with anyone for people to assume that. Alina said in her head confused.

"I'm aware of that, director"

"Since you're aware of that then I've got nothing more to say to you. You can head back to what you were doing" The director said and fixed his eyes on the computer in front of him.

"Alright director. I will take my leave now" Alina said and slowly walked to the door to see if he will call her back to complete his statement.

"Alina" the director called and she turned around immediately.

"Yes"

"Keep up the good work. I've been hearing so many positive response about you. I love that" He said and Alina smiled widely.

"Thank you director" Alina uttered trying so hard to hide her joy from the compliment.

She left the office and walked forward.

She slapped the wall lightly.

"Yes! It's the first time I'm getting a compliment from the director" Alina uttered excitedly then head back to the nurse's table but she bumped into Nolan and everyone's eyes were on them.

Alina noticed everyone's gaze on them.

"Alina, I heard you were called by the director. Why? Did something happen?" Nolan asked curiously.

"I have no idea as well. He said something about remembering the rules of no romance in the hospital. I have no idea what he meant by that? He didn't bother to explain his point to me" Alina said with a shrugged and Nolan frowned.

"Next time, he calls on you for such foolish things. Don't bother going to his office. You should always avoid his order for you to come to his office" Nolan said seriously.

"Why's that professor? What if he's calling for something important?" Alina asked and Nolan placed his hands on her shoulders.

"Just do as I say. Don't go to his office again. You can't allow yourself to be the scapegoat, we've got better targets so don't go near him okay" Nolan forewarned and Alina nodded.

Nolan walked away.

"What's wrong with the both of them? Why do they keep going in circles" Alina shrugged and she has a glance at her wristwatch.

Oh no, I'm late for Mrs Smith's check-up. Alina said in her head and ran to the changing room.

Aria met with Matthew at her place.

Matthew came in and chuckled.

"Aren't you planning on ripping me apart? Are you planning on doing it in your apartment" Matthew teased.

"Oh cut the crap and come sit here" Aria ordered as she sat at the dinning table.

"You should say thank you before offering me lunch" Matt said and Aria scoffed.

"I made this for myself. I only said you should come sit not eat" Aria pointed out and Matt nodded sarcastically.

"So why was I summoned over?" Matt asked.

"Why did you take down the drunk video of me?" Aria asked and Matt smiled.

"I told you, I'm partially responsible for what happened to you and that's why I got myself involved" Matt said.

"Is that the only reason?" Aria asked staring at him.

"Of course, that's the only reason. Why? Were you expecting to hear something else?" Matt asked flirtatiously.

"Do you like me?" Aria asked coldly and Matt laughed and stopped immediately.

"Never" He said coldly and Aria bite her lower lips as his words hurt her pride a little.

"That's good. I just wanted to clear that up because I hate being indebted to someone" Aria said coldly.

"There's no way, I will have feelings for a girl who finds me irritating and annoying. I've got lots of girls, dying to just be in same space as well and since we've cleared this up. I will take my leave now" Matt said sarcastically as he stood up.

He was about taking a step when Aria stopped him.

"Since you're here, just have lunch with me. I prepared too much, I can't finish all of it" Aria said slowly and Matt sat back with a smile.

"Thanks for the food" Matt said with a smile.

"But just so you know, I'm only going to eat because you asked me to okay" Matt said calmly and Aria rolled her eyes.

Later in the evening....

Nolan was heading into the hospital after getting himself and the nurses on shift a cup of coffee. He saw Alina heading in as well.

"Alina" He called out waving at her but his phone started ringing.

He brought out his phone and it's a call from his mum.

"Hello mum, how are you doing?" Nolan asked with a smile.

"Nolan, it's high time. You come over to America. I might end up dying without seeing you. I guess your uncle must have told you. A deadly disease was detected in my body son. I need to have you around till my last day on earth" His mum said in tears and the coffee in Nolan's hands dropped on the ground as he tried to get a grip of himself from the shocking news but his tears couldn't hold up, they rolled his cheeks.

Alina was waving at him but she noticed the shock on Nolan's face and he ran out of the hospital.

What happened? Alina questioned in her head worriedly.
