Chapter 10

Wait, what? I grabbed my glasses and put them on quickly. Was I seeing things? I glanced out of my door into my backyard again. No, she was definitely there. Whatever she said just made my mother laugh. What were they talking about?

I slipped my UnderArmour flip-flops on and went outside to investigate.

“And so, the girl was like, ‘How many calories are in a cucumber?’ and she was dead serious!” Charlie finished up her story, leaving my mom in a fit of giggles.

“Oh my gosh, that is ridiculous!” She smiled at the blonde and caught the sight of me in the corner of her eye. “Emily, you’re finally awake!”

“Uh huh,” I drawled out, cautious of what was going on. “What are you guys doing?”

“I was just getting home from work and saw your mom outside. She said she was planting some flowers, so I offered to help.” Charlie said casually, but she had a knowing smile on her face.

“That’s…nice of you.”
