The intern has been pacing outside my door for the past twenty minutes, occasionally glancing my way and then quickly averting her gaze when I look up. Her movements are giving me a headache. She's an NYU student who will graduate in a few months and is good and confident at her job. Sometimes, I catch her curious and sheepish glances for me but she's always stayed in her lane. Right now though, that lane is getting rubbed raw by the soles of her heels.

"Can I help you, Ms. Lee?" I lean back on my chair, twirling the pen in my hand as I regard her.

She startles and abruptly stops, chewing her bottom lip as she looks down at the papers in her hand and then at me as though contemplating what she should do next. Breathing in, she clears her throat and enters my office. "Can I ask you a question, Mr. De Luca?"

"Of course. What is it about?"
