"Me too, little star. Did you have a good day at school today?" I carry her toward the living room, passing by her nanny at the foot of the stairs who quietly waves at me, mouthing: "She didn't want to go to bed until you came home." I thank her and wave my phone, silently indicating I'll transfer her payment in a bit. Then she slips out of the front door—all of this happening while Gianna talks nonstop about her best friend in school.

"Ella's birthday is coming soon. There will be a party and then a sleepover at night. Can I go, mama? Her mom said she'll call you soon to ask if it's okay with you."

"A sleepover?" I draw my brows together. She never had one before. I sit, taking her with me so she sits on my lap. "I don't know, baby."

"But it's Ella! You like Ella."

"I do. But a sleepover? How will the Gilberts watch out for all of you? How about you stay after dinner and then I'll pick you up?"
