6 - Footstep

Later that night Sarah had already brought Angelica home from the bus stop and David is just getting home after having to work a bit of overtime.

Jack saw the family gathered in the living room and thought to implement his plan to level up. Unfortunately, he has to be creative and can't just tap a wall or something a bunch of times. after all, new things are scary but as they happen more and more they become less and less spooky. That, unfortunately, means less experience for him.

This means Jack needs to go all out and up his game to get the fear he needs.

However, he hesitated when he looked and saw Angelica. After carefully considering it he doesn't want to traumatize this little girl so instead of doing it now he decided to wait until she was put to bed.

Having made up his mind, he considered what time it is now and what time the family had gone to bed last night, he wanted to spend and regain the energy so he doesn't waste this waiting time.

He made his way over to the family and as he neared and took his last step he started focusing on his foot.

*Step*

Immediately the family sans Angelica who was focused on playing with her toys turned around and looked at where the sudden noise came from.

"Did you hear that?" Sarah asked David disturbed as she didn't see anything.

"Yes, it's almost as if something dropped on the floor over there." David responded as he looked around for anything out of place.

"I don't know... It sounded like a footstep to me." Sarah said unsure as she remembered the scare earlier today.

"Just one step?" David was perplexed as he questioned his wife.

"I heard something similar earlier today but it was more than one." Sarah reminisced about her scare and shivered just thinking about it.

"What?" David questioned as he felt spooked hearing something like that transpired to his wife when he wasn't there.

"We will talk later after Angelica is put to bed." Sarah whispered to her husband not wanting to continue this conversation with her daughter here.

Meanwhile back to a few minutes ago Jack who had just frightened the couple was checking his gains.

Jack saw this number and inwardly thought that he could level up tonight as he waited for the couple to be alone as he heard Sarah whisper about talking later tonight.

David nodded to his wife affirming their plan for a chat later and then the couple continued to watch television while keeping an eye on Angelica who was still playing with her toys.

A few hours passed and the couple noticed Angelica nodding off so they did the same routine as the previous night. David picked the sleepy girl up and went to put her to bed while Sarah turned the television off and cleaned up the living room a bit before heading to her room to get ready for bed.

Jack held his temptation to peek and chose to wait until David came back before following him in. Fortunately, he didn't have to wait long as David came soon while turning some lights off and then entered the master bedroom.

Jack was filled with anticipation not only for the incoming level-up but also secretly hoping to catch a glimpse with the excuse of following David and Sarah being too slow.

Unfortunately for him, she had already changed into pajamas and under the blankets so he couldn't see much.

'Tch' Jack clicked his ghostly tongue despondent while thinking why she couldn't be one of those people who like to sleep naked.

Also unfortunately for Jack in his rush to catch a glimpse and in his disappointed state he forgot that David still has to change himself. So he ended up getting an eyeful of a dad bod and hurriedly looked away while contemplating if there was any way to wash his eyes after that sight.

As David finished changing and doing his bathroom business he laid down next to his wife and wondered how to start this conversation.

The couple both sat up straighter while leaning against their bed headrest. They hesitated on what to say and where to start. Eventually, Sarah started the conversation.

"Earlier today while I was cleaning Angelica's room, I heard fast footsteps right outside the room coming closer." Sarah explained the situation that she told David she would tell him about later.

"You didn't see anyone or anything? Not even an animal?" David questioned trying to find a reasonable explanation and not jump to his superstitious conclusions.

"No, nothing anywhere. I checked the front door and it was still locked I would've heard someone enter." Sarah replied.

David hesitated to say what he thought was going on. Sarah has been with him for so long and saw this so she grabbed his hand with a loving look.

"What's wrong? Please tell me."

"I think there is something here that we can't see doing these things." David received his wife's care and no longer hesitated, so he spoke about his guess.

"What!?" Sarah heard David and shouted in fright.

"Shhh, don't wake Angelica." David shushed his wife while putting in index finger to his lips. "Besides it's just a guess who knows it might all have a logical reason." David comforted his wife.

"What should we do?" Sarah asked as she leaned toward David for security. David seeing his usually strict and collected wife show such a cute side put his arm around her.

"I'll ask a couple of friends and see what they suggest." He said he rubbed his wife's back in circles. "Let's get ready to sleep, I and Angelica have work and school tomorrow after all." The couple then lay down and snuggled.

Jack had heard the couple chat and curiously thought about what the couple would do to figure out if their place is haunted. However, he soon tossed that thought away as he got ready to make his move before they slept.
