21 Ch. 21: Miracle?

"Where did she go?"

Shaking my head, I replied, "I don't know."

You think I'm a seer?

Then, I looked away. Now this room was so messy. If there were outsiders who witnessed us being here, they would think that we were doing something bad.

Stealing valuable things. I wouldn't be surprised if people accused me of that.

I'm not sure about Charlotte. She has a good reputation. Surely no one would accuse her of a crime.

I turned to Charlotte again. "What now? Want to gather evidence before reporting to the authorities to resolve this?"

"How can I gather evidence? With this messy situation, I'm sure a lot of evidence has been lost."

No wonder Charlotte said that. This room was already too cluttered and had a gloomy atmosphere.

The floor and roof were riddled with holes like they had been bitten by large worms... when in fact they were caused by roots that appeared out of nowhere after the girl had sunk her hands into the floor.

Also the tables and chairs were out of place. Attack marks such as burnt parts from lightning strikes, even water from melted ice. Damage like this cannot be hidden even if we clean the place as if nothing had happened.

I exhaled. When I wanted to ask how to handle this, Charlotte took out her camera and took a picture.

Even though she said it couldn't be used as evidence, she still took the picture... I don't know what was going through her mind. Women are really hard to understand.

"I'm going to the second floor," she said. Then she walked off, jumping up and down like an innocent, playful-looking child.

I stared at Charlotte from behind. Staying in place and not following her. "I'll wait here. Check again if there's any evidence I can find here."

After saying that, I watched as Charlotte nodded. Not speaking a word. However, I knew what she meant was that it was fine if you wanted to be there.

As you wish, my Lady.

Charlotte disappeared from the corner of my eye. She went to the second floor.

Probably, she would be on the second floor for a long time, there were several rooms that I had not checked.

The sound of her footsteps could be heard several times, sometimes loud, sometimes soft. However, I gradually got bored and decided to look around for any evidence left behind as well.

As I checked here and there, the quest menu suddenly appeared before my eyes.

I guess I had failed the second quest. I let out a long breath.

But the quest didn't disappear immediately. Perhaps there would be a chance for me to complete the same quest.

I mean, will I, along with Charlotte, ever search like this again in another moment?

What a jerk. Why am I never given a break anyway?! So tired you know!

After a few minutes of looking for evidence in one place after another. I was tired. There wasn't a single piece of evidence that the victim's husband committed a crime against his wife... why was I looking for evidence of the perpetrator? Isn't there a bigger case, like what happened earlier?

Man, come on... I went in to prove that the man was guilty of committing a crime against his wife that got her killed.

Let Charlotte take care of the girl. I'll help a little. Even my notes are helpful, right?

Think of it that way.

At that moment, the sun's rays stung. Outside, Charlotte and I talked for a while about this matter.

Charlotte said that she would report and publicise the matter. And I just nodded in silent agreement. Although I really didn't want to get into the newspaper or the news.

I knew this matter would make me famous. However, it didn't make me happy at all.

It wasn't just the positives that I got, but also the negatives.

If my face is shown in a newspaper. Then I could be in danger. Treasure Hoarders and Boss can see it!

They'll be prejudiced against me!

And Charlotte's figure doesn't help, it just reinforces what they think of me. From the bad side, of course!

It's not strange for them to think: "Charles, he will definitely report to Charlotte, then betray us!"

Mentally mentioning Charles' name, my eyes widened.

Before they thought badly of me betraying them, they first knew that I deceived them by introducing myself as Cavendish, my fake identity!

After all, a picture of my face would be featured in a newspaper too. I'm sure they'll realise one day that my face is identical and exactly the same.

Let's hope for a miracle.

Oh, Klein Moretti--Merlin Hermes, I beg you...

Closing my eyes and pleading deeply, I then realised that Charlotte had left me in front of this haunted house alone. She was rude!

She didn't ask me about the evidence I found on the first floor. Either she knew there was no evidence there, or it had been taken so she felt there was no need to check.

Anyway, that's the end of my story...

***

Buying some food with the remaining money, I ate while leaving some behind.

I headed to the Treasure Hoarders' place, curious as to how they were doing.

That girl... seems to be in the worst state. These foods I hope can help enjoy life even if it's just for a few seconds, just for a fleeting moment.

I exhaled. In a way, I needed something at the Treasure Hoarders' place other than worrying about that girl's fate.

If I don't show up for a long time, I'm afraid they'll suspect me... the boss might already feel that I'll stab them in the back one day.

I exhaled... then again, it's very disrespectful of them to think I would do such a heinous thing as treason. A loyal person like me wouldn't bite the mama, okay?

When I checked the revolver, I thought about buying bullets first. However, my pockets were completely empty. I didn't know how to get money, I needed mora.

Being unemployed made my head want to explode.
