Mother

I teleported everyone to the house I had grown up in. Two decades had passed since I last saw it and not much had changed. The tree my brother and I had planted in the front yard now towered above the roof.

Colorful leaves covered the front yard. I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I walked to the front door. Taking a deep breath I knocked on the door and patiently waited. I could hear my mothers light footsteps coming towards the door.

The heavy oak door swung open and I held my breath. Behind me Selene and Lena waited for my que. Before things could get awkward, as I was at a loss for words, Aurora spoke aloud.

"Papa? Is that grandma?"

My mother had not changed in the years I had not seen her. It was almost uncanny how young she looked.

She still had long raven hair that fell in rivulets past her shoulders. Emerald eyes that held far too much intelligence and mischief. She looked at my daughter then past my shoulder to Selene and Lena.

"You can change your face a million times but I'll always know it's you Blake." My mother whispered.

Still a bit shell shocked I hadn't realized that my mother had recognized me somehow. It was only Luna tugging at my shirt that snapped me out of my confusion.

"Mom… I-"

"Why don't you step inside, you must have some stories to tell."

I explained my story to my mother from the beginning. Leaving nothing out she listened without interrupting.

I found it strange how unfazed she was about the whole thing. After I finished recounting everything I had gone through up until coming back to this world we sat silently for a moment.

"How did you know it was me?" I asked.

The fact that she had recognized me had popped in my head somewhere half way through my retelling. I had bounced theories in my head since then.

"Your eyes, you have the same look you did when you were first born. Also what kind of a mother would I be if I didn't recognize my own son."

"That didn't really answer my question, but I didn't come here to argue. I'm glad to see you again mom."

She smiled. "You're always welcome here, now introduce me to my granddaughters."

Luna and Aurora babbled about their days to their grandmother while Lena and Selene pulled me to the side.

"She's not telling you everything." Lena said quietly.

"That much is obvious, but like I said I'm not here to argue. She can keep her secrets so long as she doesn't tell me how to love my life."

"How do you feel?" Selene asked.

"I'm not sure how to feel. She hasn't changed, at all. But I'm glad that I came to see her for what it's worth, she's still my mother."

Selene accepted my answer, Lena looked pensive. The women looked back to the twins who were now sitting on my mothers lap talking excitedly about something. I sighed and let them continue bonding with their grandmother.

"I'll be back, I need some time to think."

Selene and Lena looked at each other and nodded, Lena went to sit on an empty chair while Selene moved to sit next to my mother. Satisfied that everyone was busy doing their own thing and not paying me any mind I stepped into my pocket dimension.
