Kindred Spirits

Kris had met Joe on the plane. They had been the only two people under the age of thirty in the first class section. It was also where Joe had invited Kris to spend her first days away from the family home.

Kris had already made reservations at a hotel so she had checked in and visited Joe the next day. She had had so much fun, she checked out of the hotel and gone to stay at her new friend’s place.

Five days later, she and Joe were rowing a boat, singing on top of their lungs to the moon. Looking up at the dark sky, littered with stars, Kris stopped abruptly and soon her companion noticed.

“What is it?”

Kris sighed. “Remember I said I would read my diaries after the full moon was out?”

Joe looked at the sky, too. “Yeah.”

“Well, it’s out.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m terrified but I know I have to do it, Josephine.”

“So do it,” the older girl advised, “tomorrow!” She started rowing again. “Come on! If we row any slower, we’ll get there when the party is over.”
