All this time Lucien is arguing and conversing the robotic voice in his head, without the knowledge of the boy who is standing idly in front of him.
The boy knows that the young man in front of him can beat the life out of him but somehow.... the boy wants to go with him.
The boy just witness the young man take a beating from the nasty thug in town. The boy thought that the young man is dead. Miraculously enough, he's still alive. He was still breathing when the boy check on him again.
The boy had this naive thought that as long as he goes with this young man, when he gets to his good side and accompanies him, he will be protected in the road, and maybe have some grain to eat on the street.
Of course, Lucien is totally oblivious about this, he just want to vent his frustration to the system who charge much more than a scammer will. When Lucien finally concludes his argument with the system - it ended badly for him since the system is unwilling to listen to his plea of lowering the price of points.
Lucien finally notice the protagonist kneeling in front of him. His skin is reflecting his bones underneath. His figure looks more like he's a six years old instead of ten years old.
"What's your name?" Lucien finally blurted out after the long stream of silence.
"Aiden." the boy blurted out.
"Well, Aiden my name is Lucien. Thanks for helping me out. What happened earlier by the way? Did you see me….?" Lucien's words trailed off, hinting the boy to fill the words he can't say. Lucien just want to make sure if the protagonist actually saw the penalty the system enacted for him.
Aiden bit his lip, showing some hesitation before he blurted out. "I saw you on the alley, suddenly surrounded by the bad thugs in this town. I- I tend to steer clear away from them. They are dangerous and crazy. They beat people without any notice and I…." Aiden pause and gulp. "I don't want to get caught up with them. That's why I hide. I watch the leader smack your head in the wall with one strike. I was scared. There's a lot of blood and it was obvious that you are no longer moving. I don't know who to call or turn to. Police don't actually work much in here. And people in town knows better than get involve. So I just hid under the basket and did not move, not when I make sure they finally left. When they did, I approach you, when I touch your nose, you are still breathing, but faintly. I panic. I did not expect that you actually survive that hit! You are amazing!"
Lucien crawled backward when the protagonist's shining eyes glimmered on him. Seeing the two obsidian round eyes that became his inspiration for years made him waver.
Damn, I'm weak for this protagonist's honest face. After the protagonist's orphanage is attacked by demons, he had changed. Anger and hatred became his drive to train and participate in simulations and games to eliminate demons.
Lucien look up to the sky. Sure enough, the tower is not here yet. It should take probably five years before its appearance. By then the protagonist's friends started dying while in the mission of clearing the tower.
"Slaying the demons" is not as simple as killing and eliminating the demons. At least, not in the second season. The first season is filled with trainings and deaths of the protagonist's orphanage, where on the way he was saved by the demon slaying faction. He was taken under their wing and receive extensive training.
Well, that was when the towers begin to emerge and mess with the protagonist. They are in the middle of training when the tower as high as the sky shining in the glint of obsidian pearl appeared in the middle of the city.
Each city has this tower and it pulled people inside. The appearance of tower made the appearance of demons run rampant in the city. Forced to participate, the protagonist fought the demons feeding on the residents and normal citizens.
The protagonist at this time is still naive, novice and trainingless. He has no abilities gifted by the tower. So killing demons turn out to be difficult for him. Not only for the protagonist but also for his friends that train with him.
When the big ugly menacing demon of hell appeared, the demon slayer faction lost most of its force, only one fourth survive from the attack. The resident's bodies have been piling up, not one survived.
By then, the tower suddenly announce that those who survived has passed the preliminary test of the tower. People ranging from old, middle age, teenagers and children began to be pulled into the tower. The demons suddenly disappeared in the face of the earth.
Lucien closed his eyes. He's not a miraculous genius neither does he remember what exactly happened on the way. But for now, Lucien want to focus on the present. Not on the plot.
He brush off the dirt on his ragged clothes and began to walk down the run down corridor of the desolate town. The demons haven't made their appearance yet. So traveling at night is fairly safer. If they count off the thugs and other bad guys loitering in the night.
Lucien pulled Aiden with him and he started to survey the place.
"Lu- Lucien? Where are we going?"
This town goes way back in the countryside. The nearest source of water is the spring behind the mountain. The forest is dense but there are some trees that produce safe eating fruits.
But its a long way up there. And if they take that road, there's no telling if they can immediately arrive at the St. Louis Church.
The boy's condition is fairly weak. They can't defend themselves. But they need food, water, and shelter to survive the cold night.
The mountain is five kilometers away. The sun has finally set. The streets are silent.
"Aiden are you hungry?"
