“Nah, you’re fine, but those people down there, they’re drinking up all your booze. I didn’t want to be there, and I felt sorry for you all alone up here, so I finished up and came up to keep you company. Is that okay?”

“Okay?” I said. “It’s wonderful. I started feeling self-pity come up again, starting with my trigger words, no one as in no one cares about me and everyone as in everyone but me. I shut it down. “Tell me about yourself, Jesse,” I said instead. The only thing that really took me out of myself was to take myself out of me and focus on someone else. If a day was not my day, I tried to make it better for someone else.
