My hands shook and I spilled most of mine. I drank what was left in a single swallow. Then held up my glass. “While you’re up.”

Alec complied and brought me another one. My third.

He walked to the window, pulled the drapes, then sat next to me . He took my hand.

“Tell me about the body, Alec, whose is it? I don’t understand any of this.”

“Calm down, Harry. The car was part of my story line. The part I didn’t share with Jake. I just fed him bits and pieces when I had to.”

“But the body. Who was in the car?”

“Try to keep up, okay?” He sighed heavily, let go of my hand, pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket, and lit one. “Jake.”

“What?”

“You heard me. He got a little too creative. Wanted to come back for you. Make it a legitimate death. He knew about the insurance policy. I’m still your beneficiary, right?”
