Chapter 4

"Ughh this is so tiring…" Melanie whines as soon as the lecturer vanishes from their sight.

"I knowww," supports Kat as she shoves all her notes inside the bag.

They just got a new assignment that is due in 3 days, not to forget that it is a group of 4 assignments. A sign of war going to break soon as Katherine HATES group assignment. The way other people are working on their part is just absurd and didn't match her working attitude.

"Are you talking about the assignment?" Mel suddenly asks with entwined and confused eyebrows.

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, I wasn't talking about the assignment though. It sounds just fine on me," she wears an effin cool and I-don't-give-a-shit face.

"Then what are you talking about? You are on period?" asks Kat in perplexity.

"Hell no! I was talking about being the most perfect person ever created by God," Mel flips her hair smugly.

Kat rolls her eyes in disbelief. She is surprised though her ass is still not abandoning Melanie.

"Idiot," she mutters indistinctly, loud enough just for her own ears. And perhaps for Melanie to hear it too.

"The prettiest and cleverest idiot ever exist," Melanie removes her butt from the seat, then walks a few steps ahead only to turn back and flooding Kat's vision with flying kisses and winks.

Kat immediately reacts by faking a vomit and coughs real hard a few times to manifest her hatred and irritation, though on the inside she felt a sense of agitation. Soon after, her footfall follows Mel's step to the hallway, with her face wearing a displeased expression, just to stay on the plot despise the opposite tingling she felt.

Seeing her friend's reaction, Mel blows a peal of huge laughter in the middle of the hallway, attracting a few other students' attention towards these two inseparable friends.

Kat is trying so hard to maintain her this-is-suck-I-hate-you face when she hears the brunette's genuine laugh. The corner of her lips is throbbing to form a smile. With that being said, whenever she gets the chance, she will let out her smile in secret, outside of Mel's grasp, to hide whatever it is in her inner heart, that even her own self is yet to discover.

"Alright girl, I'm sorry. Your meal is on me," Mel says as her laugh has slid away. She places her arm on Kat's shoulder and they begin to walk arm in arm all the way towards the cafeteria.

"You better be, bitch" she finally shines a smile at its fullest.

Kat can feel her cheeks are cramping thanks to her hard effort on hiding the smile earlier. As they reach the cafeteria, the duos decide on the meal super quick seeing that the sitting system is first-come, first-serve.

"AHA BEST SEAT UNDER AIR-CON FINALLY," Mel shouts excitedly. Luckily the cafeteria is in the white noise that though she shouts, no one seems to care or give a damn.

As soon as they both take a seat, their hands start to dig in hastily to feed those grumbling and angry stomachs.

"I have something to tell you," Kat utter after she takes a mouthful bite. Her eyes are wandering around feeling uneasy, while her head is working on the proper sentence.

Mel who is having both her cheeks puff with foods, just bob up her head as a sign that she is listening.

"We..have to cancel our bicycle picnic this weekend…" she says in hesitant. Her gaze is fixed into Mel's eyes to read the latter's reaction.

"WHYYYY?" Melanie spits out her immediate reaction, together with crumbs of bread and salads.

Seeing the flying salads coming towards her, Kat swiftly budges around to avoid them. Usually, she would already yell at Melanie for being so gross, however, this time guilts are overpowering the other feelings, enough to just shrug it away.

"I…went to tinder.." she mutters apologetically.

Melanie stops munching for a brief moment. Her mind goes blank, makes the eyes freeze in thought as she is trying to process the news.

"You found a match?" Mel mumbles with her eyebrows raised in suspicion.

Kat nods weakly. Her eye goes twinkle in hoping that Melanie wouldn't kill her for canceling their plan.

"ASSHOLE YOU'RE GOING TO LET ME BEING SINGLE ALONE?!" Mel howls as her eyes dilate.

Kat is fidgeting in silence. Her head plumps down heavily as she can't stop feeling sorry.

When Mel sees the unresponsive and apologetic Kat, suddenly she feels bad about raising her voice. She was just trying to act mad to spice up the situation as she would always do, but today, she can feel the genuine guilt in Kat's behavior.

"Is he handsome? Rich?" Mel tries to make her red friend feels better.

"Well…She's pretty.. and hot.." Kat says under her breath. She closes her eyes to get ready for another scream from Melanie.

Melanie nods abruptly hearing Kat's explanation while taking another bite of her sandwich. As she is munching her meal, it suddenly hits her.

"SHE?!!!" a big chunk of tomato flies out of her mouth as she shouts in shock. Her hand mingles around trying to reach her water bottle as she feels a choke on her throat.

Katherine who is already ready for this just gazes down her sandwich while her fingers move in a circular motion to ease up the building tension.

"You gay?!" Melanie whispers as she moves forward, lessens the gap between them so that no one else would hear them.

Kat just nods swiftly as an answer. She didn't even have the courage to look her friend in the eyes, afraid that she will get judge and hate for being gay. Just like how her friends used to leave her during high school after learning that fact.

As Kat is contemplating in her own mind, suddenly she hears Melanie's shriek. She looks up to examine the situation, only to see her friend is smiling from ear to ears while munching some leftover sandwiches.

"You…are smiling.." Kat stutters in awe.

"Yes, bitch! I'm so happy!! I have always wanted a gay friend ihiiii," she giggles whilst shaking her body excitedly.

After seeing Mel's reaction, Kat finally exhales a deep and heavy sigh from her mouth. It feels so much lighter after telling some big secret to the one you trust. It feels even more astounding knowing that she does not hate you for being who you are. She eventually forms a smile in relief as she continues to devour her meal.

Soon after their mealtime is over, they both parts away to each designated hostel room mark the end of their day today.

Once Mel goes into her room, she throws over her body onto the mattress. Her head is still processing some big facts that she just learned today.

Melanie tries to remember how she first felt when she knows that Kat is having a date. Somehow, it feels weird yet isn't at the same time. As if there is a sense of regret in her heart after learning that Kat is having a date, with someone else, but feeling joy at the same time on the latter's behalf.

She tries to understand the inconvenient big lump feelings that were present or precisely is present as it is yet to be gone though it happens an hour ago already. As she tries to dig deeper, her breath becomes heavier out of sudden.

Cold rushes are running all over her body. This uncomfortable feeling is telling her something inconvenient.

This feeling, that tells her she is nothing.

It's like, she is something and nothing at the same time.

It left her to an unanswered inner conflict that is tangled into a deep, tight knot thus almost impossible to untie it on her own.

"Ho-hum, the hell I was thinking…? Stupid thoughts go far away, I hereby summoning Albert Einstein and Mr. Bean back into me," she chants out her own man-made spell, trying to shrug those off completely.

Little did she know, those ignored bizarre sentiments will soon begin piling up on their own without realizing, demanding answers persistently.

Where did it all goes wrong?

Here, where it is all going wrong.
