Chapter 20: Breakfast

One final breath and I walked into the bustling kitchen. Beth was at the stove putting a heap of bacon on a plate while humming a motherly tune. She was making the best smelling breakfast I could imagine. There was French toast, biscuits and gravy, eggs, and hash browns already lined up on the island. Chase was taking each plate she piled food on and placing them in the line. James was grabbing glasses from the cabinets and then pouring water in them. Eric was sitting on one of the stools in front of the island drinking coffee with a scowl on his face. Then there was Logan who looked so out of place with his massive body laying out silver ware. I could not help but smile while watching them all.

Once Beth was done with stacking all the food she looked up and caught my smile and smiled back. She had such a genuine smile and kindness flowed through her grey eyes. Beth made me dream of a world where she was my mother. My past could have been so much different with someone like her in it. "Oh Darling... you must be Little Wolf. I am Beth and I am so excited to finally meet you.", she said. As she rushed over she wiped her hands on her apron then reached out to motion me to a bar stool. "Come on in now and sit down. I made some food for you!", she said excitedly. She must really take pride in her work. As she came closer I fought back my unease with her nearness. I could act normal I told myself. I knew she was not a threat now but that fear in the back of my mind still warned me of possible danger.

As I came closer to my seat Chase came over and pulled the chair out for me. I sat down and he pushed it in. He then sat down beside me and spoke, "Good morning Little Wolf. Would you like some coffee?". I nodded my head and James grabbed a mug from the cabinet handed to Eric who poured the coffee and then he handed it to Chase. Chase sat the mug down in front of me and I took a sip. The warmth felt good going down my throat.

I could not stop myself from watching Chase's actions out of the corner of my eye. Everything he did from the way he held the spoon as he stirred his coffee to the way he sat so straight was well thought out. He acted so formal and I wanted to just reach out and mess up his perfect blonde hair. How can someone be so perfect and refined so easily? I wanted to learn more about Chase, including what kind of shifter he was. The more my wolf and I tried to place his scent the more our curiosity peaked.

Logan took my empty plate pulling me away from thoughts of Chase and proceeded to fill it with food. He sat it down in front of me too with a smile. I had never expected anyone, especially this many people to treat me so well. It's like I wanted for nothing. I almost pinched myself to make sure I was really awake.

The men filled their plates after mine and then sat down to eat. I took a big bite and could not stop myself from letting out a low moan. My eyes were closed as I chewed the first bite. I had to shut down all my other senses except for taste and smell and enjoy this wonderful food. When I opened my eyes again all the men were staring at me. Beth swatted her towel at them and used her stern voice, "Behave like gentlemen and eat your food before it's cold!". They quickly focused on their food and began eating it as fast as I was, well except Chase who took his time.

"Beth, this food... just thank you... It's very good!", I said through mouth fulls of eggs. She beamed at me and went to work cleaning up the kitchen.

I finished every bite on my plate. I could never waste food when I knew what it was like to be truly hungry. James asked if I wanted more but I had to decline the offer. If I ate one more bite I was going to have to be wheeled out of here. If anything was left after all these men were through eating then I would be sure to sneak some out of the fridge later. As I looked around the table the food was disappearing fast and I think leftovers were becoming unrealistic. These men could really put away some breakfast.
