Chapter 43

After lunch of fried chicken. Grandpa showed everyone how to kill and clean chickens. They all ate three of the four chickens. Grandpa and Joy headed outside. Joy carried a bouquet of flowers Angela made. She wore a dress and almost scared everyone because only Winston and Angela saw her in one before. Grandpa wore his only old suit and tie, tied loosely. He had a shit-eating possum grin on his face. Joy held a tight smile.

Travis was dressed in a button shirt and jeans, and Winston the same. Dustin just wore his jeans and a T-shirt. He was still short of clothes. He stood in front to perform the ceremony. He held a book under his arm and looked somber.

Winston read the spine of the book. “History of Oregon? Are you going to read from it as part of the ceremony?”

Dustin laughed. “Nope. I just thought the book looked official. I couldn’t find a Bible.”
