We knew where he’d last been seen, based on the news reports and the police scanner, so, under the dark of night, that’s where we headed, sneaking out of our respective homes, me on foot, Craig on his scooter.

We met up at the edge of the woods, costumes on, a full moon overhead, lighting our way. We found a path, the scooter kicking up dust, but at least Craig was able to keep up with me.

“Um, Brain?” I said, my head all of a sudden catching up to my legs.

“Yes, Fierce?” he replied into my earpiece.

“Not to rain on your pride parade, but even I can’t find a scent without a scent to go on. I mean, not like we had lunch with the senator this week, not like I know what he smells like.” I wondered if he had a Barbie doll to take a whiff of. Probably not, right?

The scooter zigged, then zagged. Craig coughed into my ear as he sucked in a cloud of dust. “Oh,” he hacked. “I think we might’ve gotten carried away just a bit.”
