39 Chapter 38: The resolve (No R18)

(Titus's (Takeru) POV)

Right now, I was having a unique lunch with various dishes dressed on the table, prepared by none other than my third wife, Tamamo-no-Mae. On the other hand, Tamamo's curious gazes were also locked on me, eagerly awaiting my response.

I initiated the feast by taking the first bite. It was some kind of dumpling that Tamamo had prepared after copying my cooking for a few days. I was expecting it to be below my level, but I widened my eyes as the food melted in my mouth like butter.

"H-how is it, Takeru-sama?" Tamamo hesitantly asked.

"This is really delicious. I just don't have words to describe them." I gave my genuine marks for her cooking. I wasn't exaggerating. Her food could be said to be on par with master chefs. She would give even Emiya a tough challenge in the cooking department.

"I am so glad~!" I passed a bright smile, finally taking a breath.

"Humph, this is nothing compared to my mommy's cooking." On the other hand, Jack snorted, but her hands said otherwise as she stuffed her mouth with various food items. Upon my gaze, she firmed her manners and thanked Tamamo, "Thank you for the food."

Seeing the killer child thanking her, Tamamo sprouted a sigh of relief.

We then ate lunch together before it was time for Jack to leave.

"Goodbye, mommy," Jack then gave me a kiss on the cheek before disappearing into the thin air. I felt a little sad since I wanted her to live with me, but she still had to observe the capital, especially Abe-no-Seimei and what he was up to. So far, it seemed like the government was still in the midst of change. Since with me and Emperor Toba gone, someone had to take charge. I heard Emperor Toba's son was taking care of the affairs for now. Yes, he had children, but his wives were mostly gone. Two were dead, while the other eloped with another man. I guess the dude was just unlucky. Well, so sympathy from me after what he had done to Tamamo.

"Why does she call you mommy?" Tamamo questioned.

"Think of it as one of her kinks besides murdering," I said, and before I could get up, Tamamo stopped me, asking me to wait for the final tray.

She then wrapped all the dishes before bringing some a teapot and some cups.

"Takeru-sama, this is an herbal tea. I have prepared specifically for you as a sign of me being your true wife. This is also my trump card. You will love this." With those words, she started brewing the tea.

She was right. As soon as the first drop hit the cup bottom, the immense fragrance of fresh tea leaves hit me like the fresh air of spring. But more than that, she looked gorgeous while brewing the tea. Upon paying some attention, I noticed she was also dressed in a beautiful pink kimono. Her hair was dyed with a beautiful bun, and she was emitting a rosy, fresh fragrance. I had never seen her dressed like that after our marriage. However, I knew the meaning of appearance, but I decided to wait.

Soon, she presented the tea with both of her hands, and I took the cup. Upon sipping the first few drops, I felt something.

I didn't know what was happening, but I started to notice a lot of things. I looked around and saw the field filled with various beautiful flowers right around my table.

Our little house was located right behind Tamamo's old shrine. It was a small Japanese-style wooden house with two rooms and everything in it. It also had additional space erected by wooden planks where I was sitting on the small table. From there, I could see various flowers and enjoy the meal.

But it was the first time I noticed just how incredible the view looked. I could also hear birds chirping and leaves fluttering. I also noticed how clear my vision had become. I could see Tamamo's pupils widening with anticipation and her glossy lips.

For a moment, I thought she had mixed something in the tea, but that wasn't the case. It was just regular pure herbal tea. It was the place, the silence and the woman that made the moment just so pure and warm. Tamamo also brewed the tea for herself, and for the next few minutes, what felt like an eternity, we enjoyed the tea in silence.

After finishing the final drop, I spoke, "Thank you, Tamamo-no-Mae, for everything." It was not for just tea but for everything she had done for me in her capacity as my wife.

She would cook delicious meals, wash my clothes and take care of my belongings. Whenever I would leave to go to a nearby town for supplies and investigation, she would prepare meals for me in advance, and when I would return, she would greet me at the door. In short, I had never seen such a perfect woman in my life.

I wasn't trying to diss Nero or Boudica. Let's not talk about Nero's household skills for now. Boudicca, on the other hand, was just decent. But none of them come close to Tamamo when it comes to taking care of me. Maybe it was her specialty as the best wife.

I then placed a pillow on the mattress and leaned on it. Sensing my intention, Tamamo also lay on my left arm before gently hugging me. She then looked at me with her bright face, and we continued to look at each other with affection in our eyes.

"Once again, thank you for everything." I then gave a quick peck to her lips that blossomed a fresh smile on her face, "You know you are my wife, right? Why don't you make demands?"

As happy as she looked, she was still conserved. She had never asked for anything like jewelry or other womanly items except for some groceries/food items. Let's not talk about Nero; even Boudica would casually demand bags and other items from stores. So, I wanted to know if there was something she desired.

"Ano…" She hesitated for a moment before asking something unexpected, "Am I lacking as a woman?"

"No." I answered straight out. If anything, she was a complete package of beauty and competency.

"Then why you… haven't touched me?" Tamamo asked, bringing up the topic that I didn't want to hear.

Even though it had been two weeks since I had recovered from illness, I had never 'touched' her. In short, she was asking about sex.

"I…" I didn't have words. How could I tell her that my thing didn't work anymore? However, the real reason for my hesitation was my second quest to kill Tamamo-no-Mae.

I bit my lips and answered, "Okay then. Tonight, wait for me in the room."

Hearing those words, Tamamo blushed, and her twin tails started wagging. She then kissed me and left to start cleaning the house.

I sighed and opened the mission panel.

'Skip' means I would be able to see my dying moments directly. It wasn't available since there was that 'monster' ready to interrupt our 'normal' life. I could also quit the mission right now, but I won't be able to see anything. In either case, Tamamo would be dying at the hands of that 'monster', and I had to prevent it.

"This system is clearly bugged." Whoever made this system didn't consider the presence of this anomaly.

I sighed and took out the dagger from my inventory, "Let's get over with it."

It was the night of the full moon when I entered my bedroom and found a woman with pink hair sitting in Seiza (a formal, traditional way of sitting in Japan). I prayed in my heart for her to push me, to resist or to stop me, but I was met with a smile instead.

"If that's Takeru-sama wants then I am fine with it. I am scared but I will not stop you." She then raised her arm and wiped my tears, "Takeru-sama, I love you. In after life or my next reincarnation, if I meet you again, I will still love you. So please never blame yourself."

Her kindness hit me like an arrow. It was warm but painful. I gritted my teeth, but my confidence slowly weeping away.

I closed my eyes and prayed for someone to stop me, but no one came. I took my last breath and brought the dagger down.

"Haa!" I screamed, and at that moment, I saw what happened.

I stabbed her multiple times, ruthlessly killing her. However, at that time, I saw something leaving me. The mission was over, and I was able to save the world, but I destroyed myself as a person. Before I was able to see that no matter what happened, I would continue to move forward, but this time, I gave up. I couldn't see the future no matter what I did. It was all dark.

Or at least that's what I thought.

"Huh?" When I opened my eyes, I didn't see any blood. I was still holding the dagger. It seemed like I still hadn't killed her.

Tamamo, on the other hand, had her eyes tightly shut. After nothing had happened for a while, she peaked from one eye and rubbed her chest for any wound. "Are we in afterlife? Can we do 'that' here?"

I sighed and threw the dagger.

"You are an evil woman." With that, I walked out of the room. I then came to the garden, leaned on a giant boulder, and looked at the full moon.

In the end, I decided to choose saving myself than saving the world.

Tamamo also sat beside me with her eyes darting me curiously. I sighed and took her in my arms.

"You are really an evil woman, you know that." I smiled and kissed her cheek.

"Hehe~!" Tamamo chuckled and nestled herself in my embrace.

She then looked at me and said, "So… If Takeru-sama wants, I am all ears." Pointing at her fox ears, "I mean I am all fox ears. It helps me hear clearly… Sorry, that was a bad pun."

"….pff, hahahah!" I burst into laughter. Her pun was terrible, but her way of bringing down the tension was just cute. I then wiped my tears of laughter and looked at her, "Let's see…"

After that, I told her everything.

"Wow… I didn't know you were such a heroic person…" Tamamo gasped in surprise, "Closing down Yoshiwara, taking in so many children and then fighting against injustice of woman, I don't have words to praise you." She looked at me, "I have so much respect for such a person and now I am even more proud of myself to be your wife."

"I know right; I am also proud of myself for taking the role of that person…" I sighed, "And so, I can't betray you. It is just not like me."

"But, Takeru-sama, the world will be in danger. I could still be summoned as a servant, right? Please believe me I will still hold same feeling and we could start over." Tamamo then brought up the question of that 'Monster.'

She was right. I could kill her and save the world. Maybe the system would give me some kind of mechanic where I could summon her in real life or even make her human again so that we could start a new life. But I just didn't have the guts to spill her blood.

"Will you be able to do it if you were in my position?" I asked, to which Tamamo fell into silence.

"I am sorry…" She apologized, "But then what are we going to do about this monster?"

"I have decided to fight them." My strength might not be great, but I had decided to fight anyway. At least I won't be running like a coward. Besides, I was practicing new spells and pretty confident in my prowess.

Tamamo also promised to help me. She said that with her tails multiplying, she should be strong enough to take down even a servant. By the way, I had asked her about her tails. She said she didn't know how they grew. She didn't even notice her second tail sprouting until I pointed it.
