Fourth Third Night

Just as the duo of Rin and Evander were chatting, there was something else going on in a different part of Fuyuki city, centering around Lancer.

"Man, can this war get any worse?" He uttered as he watched the Fuyuki city from the top of a building.

He was there while Archer and Saber was duking it out against Berserker and man what a monster he was. He held his own for a while against two top notch servants.

And that made Lancer's blood boil. He wanted to also get in the action but alas, his cowardly master didn't let him.

He could only watch while a battle just like in his dreams was going on before his eyes.

That's why his mood was down. He was sulking, if it was the word.

"Hmm?" Then, his sharp instincts noticed a shadow running through the city.

He couldn't exactly make out the figure, but he was pretty sure that shadow was a servant too.

"Heh. I can get the crumbs at least." Lancer said as he disappeared from his place and appeared right above the shadow.

His red spear aimed right at its body, but the shadow was nimble. It managed to dodge in the last second.

"Hmm, from your looks, I'd say Assassin, right?" Lancer said as he finally took a good look at the shadow.

His body was covered with a black robe, his face couldn't be seen because of a skull mask. And weirdly enough, his right arm was a lot bigger compared to his body and was wrapped in a black cloth. 'Yeah. Definitely Assassin.' This find diminished his excitement a bit.

Assassins were never known for a frontal combat. Lancer couldn't get the battle he wanted from such a cowardly class. 'But, beggars can't be choosers I guess.' He thought as he readied his spear.

But Assassin wasn't looking for a fight as he turned around and dashed.

"Raahh! Get back here!" Lancer shouted as he sprinted right behind Assassin.

They jumped from rooftops to rooftops.

*Clang!* *Clang!*

Assassin threw daggers to slow his advance but they were all blocked by his spear.

*Clang!* *Clang!*

Parried daggers stuck themselves on the walls and destroyed some parts of it.

Then, Lancer had enough of this cat and dog chase. He took aim, and threw his spear with all his power.

He didn't invoke its name though. His target was too far away for that.

*Boom!*

Assassin managed to throw himself down the building and on top of a truck just in time to dodge the looming death.

"Tch." Lancer clicked his tongue and sprinted right behind the truck.

Assassin continued throwing daggers but they were futile as Lancer called back his spear and parried all of them. Then, he managed to catch up to the truck.

He jumped on the back to engage in a close quarter combat with Assassin. He was so close. It was within his reach.

But of course, Assassin didn't give him the chance as he jumped away and threw a few daggers towards the gas tank.

*Boom!*

The truck exploded but all it did was to put some smoke screen between Lancer and Assassin.

Only a servant could harm another servant. Even if a nuke exploded right next to them, it wouldn't even leave a scratch on their bodies.

Assassin ran through the forest with Lancer behind him.

Lancer was like a mad dog that didn't let go of its prey. But that became his doom.

There was puddle of a black liquid right in the middle of the forest. Assassin, stopped right after reaching there.

Lancer found his chance end thrust his spear but it was dodged. Then he retrieved his spear to block the blows of Assassin.

But while they were fighting, the black liquid started to move and reddish black tendrils shot towards Lancer and grabbed his legs.

"This?!" He looked towards Assassin only to see him unharmed.

"You are a troublesome opponent indeed Lancer. But this is as far as you can go." Assassin finally uttered his first words.

More and more tendrils shot from the liquid and enveloped Lancer's body, no matter how much he fought against it.

"Aarrrgg! You bastard!! At least I'll take you with me!" Lancer shouted as his spear started giving of an ominous red glow. He pulled his arm back and aimed at Assassin who was standing there without doing anything. "Gae-Bolg!" Then he threw the spear.

Gae Bolg, the spear that always finds the heart of its target flew true. It had the ability to reverse causality.

Instead of, 'the spear was thrust that's why the heart was pierced', it became, 'The heart was pierced therefore the spear must've been thrust'

There was no way out for Assassin, his death was certain. And he didn't even bother to put up any defenses. The spear pierced through his heart, leaving a huge bloody hole in its place.

"Heh." Lancer gave a simple laugh as Assassin body fell backwards.

"Well done Lancer. I didn't choose wrong. I expect more of such performances in the future."

Then came the voice of a man who suddenly appeared right next to him.

He had long white hair with pointed ears, a staff with a skull on top and a black robe adorned in jewels.

The man then looked towards the corpse of Assassin. "Arise." With his words, and ominous blue glow enveloped Assassin's body.

The hole in his chest closed up and his heart started beating again. He slowly got up and knelt before the man. "Thank you my lord."

"Hm. You did well." The man nodded.

Then finally Lancer's whole body was covered in tendrils and was sucked beneath the black liquid. He could only watch as he became corrupted.

"Ah dear world, when I asked 'can this war get any worse' it was a rhetorical question, not a challenge."

***

"My abilities?" Evander asked as he thought upon the answer. "Well, I can cook." He shrugged.

"You can cook…? That's not what I meant!" Rin yelled as she slammed the table.

"You will see in the future anyways Rin, why do you want to ruin the magic?" But Evander wasn't intimidated. "But, if you want to know so much, I can give you a little bit of information. I have a Reality Marble."

"Reality Marble? Servants can have Reality Marbles?" Rin was surprised upon hearing that.

"And that right there, is your problem Rin. You are a great magus, a genius at that. But you underestimate others too much. Servants aren't just brutes who fight their ways in. They are legends, great warriors that excel both in brains and brawns. They didn't get to where they are through brute force. Don't forget that." Evander said seriously to warn her.

And it worked. Rin felt a little embarrassed from her mistake being pointed put but she couldn't refute it. She did underestimate others a lot. And her mistake being pointed put in peace was much better than realizing it on her own when she was in danger of being killed.

She looked away as a light blush covered her cheeks. "…I will be careful from now on. Sorry."

"Heh. You better." Evander said with small smile on his lips.
