Before I could say something stupid and make the atmosphere unbearable, I reminded myself Max's parents were one of a kind. They pretended to like me when the occasion called for it but as soon as it was just me and them—with or without their son in the room—they would express their displeasure. 

His mother was especially a nightmare. She would keep droning on about what a spoiled princess I was and how miserable their son would be with me.
