Chapter 46: In Good Hands
Jonathan remembered only moments from that point. Alphonse was next to him, in a dark space. There was the deep rumble of a strong engine being put to the test.
“You’re going to be okay… You’re going to be okay,” Jonathan heard the vampire’s deep voice, almost disembodied. He was speaking in gentle, soothing tones.
The next, the vampire was talking to someone else, maybe on the phone? Jonathan couldn’t make out the words.
Everything was dark after that. He felt sometimes like he was falling, sometimes like he was pressed against a hard wall.
Then void, total void. He was alone, but for once, the feeling didn’t threaten Jonathan. He was alone, and nothing could touch him he felt.
‘There’s nothing holding me down,’ he thought. The feeling made him feel a sudden, previously unknown freedom, as if he were floating in the air, unbound.
‘But how will I get back down?’ a part of him worried.
‘Why would you want to?’ a voice not his own responded.
