Chapter 41: Audition

Jonathan woke up and rolled over to face the room. Everything was the same as when he’d gone to bed, the same bare, lifeless walls, the desk still small. The only real change was the light filtering through the window close to the ceiling.

Jonathan swung his feet to the floor and found that he felt strangely better than the day before. Not as sore, not as nauseous. Why?

He stood and stretched. It was then that he noticed the door was open.

Dr. Page stood in the doorway, out of the light. He was carrying a tray with a covered dish and a glass of water.

Instantly, the regrets, the fear, and the anxieties of the night were gone. Jonathan smiled, and said warmly, “Good morning, Dr. Page!”

The professor simply stared coldly at him from the shadows.

Jonathan stood still in the room, waiting for what the professor wanted. It was kind of him to check on Jonathan this early.
