Chapter 40: Escapism

Jonathan dragged himself into the bed in the corner at some point. It was a firm mattress with a thin blanket. The room was increasingly reminding Jonathan of a prison cell. It was small, austere, and bare. Like the rest of the house, the walls were a cool white color.

There was a small window over the desk, too high on the wall for Jonathan to even look out, let alone consider crawling out of. And while he hadn’t tried it yet, Jonathan was confident the door was locked. Even if it wasn’t, Jonathan’s pain would keep him from getting anywhere fast, and Dr. Page would surely be nearby.

Jonathan had cried until he felt numb. His throat hurt, and his eyes stung. He lay on the bed, fully clothed, and tried to convince himself this was all a bad dream. He would wake up soon, and Alphonse would be there, waiting for him.
