Raven’s POV
Never before, in my life, have I ever been so torn about what I needed to do. When I was younger, before changing and becoming this, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to work, gain a skill or trade, and eventually find a family to provide for. Once I became a creature of the night, I knew my duty was to fulfill the will of the Luciano family. Marcello gave me purpose and, while I resented it in the beginning, I knew what needed to be done to keep myself and others around me safe.
I couldn’t lose anyone—not again.
I decided years ago to protect the Luciano family, my found family members who were turned by Marcello, and I have. I vowed to keep secrets and end existences based on the needs of the family. Hesitation was banished from my list of reactions.
Detached.
Unfeeling.
Just the other evening, I ended four vampires from a different, rival gang simply because I was instructed to. I am good at what I do.
