Evolution of the Last Nyre

This is the story of a 30 year old dead beat who unexpectedly dies. He's given a new shot at life but something doesn't feel right...wait HE'S A MONSTER! Our mc is one who seeks power but he wasn't always like that. Sphar (correct pronunciation is s-far) is an ancient forgotten monster called a Nyre, which is quite similar to a bat. He's gifted a system and completely abuses its power like all mc's do. This story is very slowly paced as I don't want to rush it. Time skips won't happen too often and if they do it won't be for long. His greatest desire is to explore the world, or at least it was..., but escaping his home will be a bit more tricky than he thought. Luckily his species is perfect for covert operations. Let the adventure begin! Authors note- I'm an inexperienced writer and I'm only doing this for fun. The story has a very slow start and the chapters are only 1.3k to 1.5k words long. I don't plan on locking chapters ever but if you want to support me, gifts are greatly appreciated. My release time will be a complete mess as this is only a hobby but I hope you enjoy the story. Btw the cover art is not mine, if you own it and want me to change it please don't hesitate to ask. You can contact me on Insta, my user is Bandit_Candit

- Quest Spree

[You've received 515 exp for killing Dungeon Slime*25]

[QUEST COMPLETED]

Kill 25 Slimes in 2 days. You've received 450 exp, 1 silver, and 1 skill point.

'Alright. That's one out of the three quests finished. That only took me a few minutes. Now let's go pick some Flares.' I thought while figuring how much money I would get from completing these quests.

The slime Subjugation Quest would give me 2 in total, the House Cleaning would be 3, and the flower picking would also be 3. That's counting the silver my system would give me, giving me 10 in total. That's not bad.'

I walked into the woods and started looking for the Flare flowers that grew in damp and dark places. After roaming around aimlessly in the dark for several hours, I had finally found all 20 pieces I needed. The quest gave me 1 silver, 2 attribute points, and 1 skill point.

I walked back to my home and layed in my hole while examining my stats.

'Stats'

[STATS]

Name: Sphar (Rank 1 Basic Mage)

Species: Half-Life Nyre (2nd evolution)

Level: 15 (2,793/4,873)

Hp: 315/315

Stamina: 83/83

Mana: 210/210

Strength- 64[+] (+12)

Agility- 84[+] (+32)

Dexterity- 52[+]

Intelligence- 67[+]

Vitality- 74[+] (+22)

Attribute Points: 24

I put 10 points into intelligence, and 3 into every other stat, leaving me with 2 attribute points left. If I took off my gear all my stats would be 55 except for intelligence, which would be 77. I then checked my skills and saw that I had 5 skill points. I put one into every magic skill I had and closed out of everything.

'I'll stop by the old lady's house early in the morning and clean it for her. Afterward, I'll run to the guild, turn in my quests, and go to school. I still haven't gotten my uniform.' I thought as relaxed and let the time slip by. I could be mindlessly farming slimes, but all the effort just really didn't seem like it was worth it. That and I just felt like being lazy.

Before I knew it the sun was starting to peek over the horizon and through the trees. I got up and walked to the gate and after briefly showing the guards my ID, they let me in. I ran over to the old lady's house that the quest described and knocked on the door.

"Why hello there." She said with her unstable voice. 'She could fall over at any moment.' I thought, kind of feeling bad for her. We talked for a few minutes before she gave me a list of chores to do which I completed as fast and thoroughly as I could. She double-checked my work and sent me on my way.

I ran over to the Guild and turned in all three quests, collecting my 5 gold pieces which I added with the three I got from my system and the 2 I already had. I left and walked to the guild as fast as possible without attracting any unwanted attention.

"Finally!" I said once I arrived at the front door. The guards saw me and let me enter without any trouble. I walked over to my class as fast as I could, hoping I wasn't late.

*knock knock knock*

"Enter." The deep voice said. I opened the door and stepped in. Everyone was already here. "What's your excuse for being late Sphar?" The teacher asked with a stern look. "I didn't know when class started and I also don't own anything that tells me the time," I replied with an embarrassed tone.

"We'll get that settled out later. For now, Sit and join the rest of the class for our lesson." He said before briskly returning to his board and resuming his discussion of explaining the effects of all basic tier 1 spells. I walked to the back and took my seat. Lily thought it was funny as she was giggling behind her hand that was covering her face, while Corey was asleep.

After around three hours of memorizing spells and their effects, he dismissed the class for on-campus training for a few hours. Basically, where you can do anything you want on campus, but most people use it to train or study.

I pat Corey and the shoulder and woke him up. Lily Got up and waited outside the classroom for us. After Corey finally got his stuff together, we all left to go to the lunchroom.

"So what skills do you have Sphar?" Lily asked while we were waiting in line to get our food. "Were you not listening in class?" I asked. "I was. I'm just testing you, that's all." She said before turning around and laughing once more.

"Is she always like that?" I asked Corey as he was finishing a yawn. "Yeah." He groaned before stretching his body to wake up. After getting our food and taking our seats, some lady walked up to me.

"Are you Sphar Linx?" She asked. "Yeah, why do you ask?" I responded. 'I haven't even started to eat my meal yet. Come on.'

"I'm here to take you to the dressing room and take your measurements so we can get you your uniform. Also, we were told you need to learn about time and obtain a clock since you came from a remote village far away and never learned such things." She said in a casual voice.

'When you word it like that I just sound like an idiot.' I thought before getting up. "Since you're not gonna eat that, can I?" Corey asked with a greedy look on his face. "You can have it." I said as I walked off with the older looking woman.

---------------

"Here you are, your uniform sir." Said the lady as she returned from the room she had gone in. "Thank you," I responded before walking to a changing Room. The Uniform was just black pants with a white shirt and a yellow sleeveless and short overshirt.

The shoes were black and yellow. It all looked really good yet strange at the same time. I put my gear in my inventory and walked out. It matched my black hair and long ears quite well.

I walked back to the lunchroom where Corey and Lily were waiting for me. "You look...different," Lily said before looking away. "Your finally back. Let's go to the training yard and see what you're made of." Corey said and we all threw away our trash and left. We walked out into a giant yard where lots of people were fighting each other and practicing skills and such.

There were people wielding dual daggers to others swinging swords as big and as wide as them. There were others with huge shields and some with two smaller ones. Some people even had staffs and wands as they cast their magic.

"This place looks so cool." I mumbled while we were walking to an area where no one was standing. "So is that shortsword the weapon you mainly use?" Corey asked me as he pulled his staff out of its holster.

"It is for now, but I plan on changing it in the future. I'm not exactly sure what I want to use yet." I said while grabbing my weapon and getting in a reposting stance. "Well, we can practice with different practice steel weapons later. Let's duel." He asked while charging at me. 'Why ask if I don't get a say.' I thought as he approached me.

'I don't have my coat so I can't use [After Image] I'll have to rely on purely my magic abilities.' I cast [Electric Field] and darted in the air until I was out of sight from Corey for a split second. I cast [Thunder] as I zoomed towards him just in case he managed to dodge it. However instead of dodging he cast [Earth Wall] twice, effectively making a small roof above him.

'Such control' I thought as I halted my dash and landed on the ground. "You may have an advantage in both speed and ability, but you lack control. Or should I say innovation?" He said before running at me once more. I followed his lead.

'My speed is much higher than his, especially with [Electric Field] cast. I can overwhelm him.' I thought before picking up my pace. I started dashing all around him and I saw his eyes couldn't keep up. I darted up in the air behind him and flung myself at full speed at his back. Before he could react I already had my blade up to his neck.

"I admit defeat." He said while putting his weapon away. "You're extremely fast for a mage. Now let's go test some weapons out for you."
