20 Chapter 20 - Future Plans
The next day came, and Zach was now ready to leave the place seeing him looking at the people who had chosen to follow him, and just like he thought, only a number of them had believed in him and most of them were the victims of rape and their families which totaled only to twenty-one people together with Rose and Max which was already enough for the time being.
Zach then just looked at the people who had chosen to stay before staring at Officer Jenny who was walking closer to them. In fact, the two of them talked again when the morning came regarding the promise that he made but since she had too much of questions that he didn't answer especially when it came to food, she was not convinced to come with them.
"This is a spare radio that we have found on the way. Remember to call me when you encounter something." Officer Jenny said as she gave a two-way radio to Zach thinking that there might be a time that they will need it so just in case, they have a means to communicate.
Receiving the radio, Zach couldn't help but feel excited but he didn't show it outside and just remained calm and put it back in the bag that he had from the inventory. He actually also looted the dead police last night but aside from one thing that caught his attention, he didn't find anything else like the radio that Officer Jenny had given him.
"Do you really plan to stay? Though we didn't have a good first impression of each other, I can tell that you weren't like those beasts. It would be a shame for you to get trapped here." Zach then said while thinking about it all night. Officer Jenny and her two companions would be a great help not just in security but also in the course of training newbies like him about guns.
"No need. We can't go as we still have people to look after this place." Officer Jenny declined as she looked at Zach and she really felt like she was not talking to some young man but an adult person who had experienced life. Though he looked serious about what he was saying, she felt like it was an empty promise knowing just how scarce food is right now.
"If you say so. Until then." Zach said before he started walking away together with Rose, Max, and nineteen other people. He felt like the matter regarding his father would be put to a halt for now as he thought of taking these people first back to his camp and the fact that four days after, a new calamity would strike again.
Following their journey, Zach and the others were moving very slowly but Zach didn't complain about it and even took the chance to get to know them, especially the adult men which made him ecstatic knowing their professions before things happened. Among the men, two were plumbers, one was a mechanic, one was an architect, one carpenter, and the rest were company workers.
Meanwhile, only two of the women were skilled and they were a dentist and a lawyer while the rest were normal housewives. The remaining of the group were all students with differing courses and specialties like management, teaching, and culinary.
Zach never thought to actually bring some good ones with him which will only help him with his plans back in the camp. They have walked all day on the road even though Zach could make use of the cars on the road by summoning out some gas but he didn't do it as he wanted to test the limits of the people who have chosen to follow him.
Giving them some chocolate to move on, they walked all the way back and it took them two days to finally arrive at Zach's place. Zach was surprised that no one complained a thing during their journey which only proved that they really trusted him and during these two days, he didn't forget to communicate with Officer Jenny every morning.
It was noon when Zach and the others finally arrived in the neighborhood and there they saw Vanessa, Zoey, and Hannah looking at them in the distance after Adam and Eve ran their way back to the house wanting to say that they were finally back.
"Zach. We missed you." Vanessa immediately greeted and embraced Zach in her arms. She didn't say anything like, 'I thought you won't be back in a week or two', as she was more worried about his safety, and seeing him after days of being apart had completely eased her mind.
After that, Zoey and Hannah also greeted him with delight as they were also worried about his safety. Not before long, Hannah and Vanessa started inquiring about the people who had come with him as they immediately helped them take a rest for a while knowing that they were moving all the time while Zoey greeted and talked with Rose and Max whom she was familiar with.
Meanwhile, the people who have chosen to follow Zach were completely dumbfounded as they all thought that they had some kind of a place to stay, and yet what faced them was a house and another large building beside it however, they did not complain and chose to trust since they could no longer go back now knowing how far they have traveled just to come in here.
Heading inside the house, the place suddenly became cramped but it was doable as they started eating lunch. The newcomers, even Rose and Max, were completely shocked by the food that was served to them. It was only then did they realized that Zach might really be telling the truth while looking at cooked meat on their plates.
The newcomers could be found crying while eating as they never thought of eating such a delicacy once again in their lives. They looked at Zach and his family like they were angels after giving them such luxury to eat such a thing. The surprise, however, didn't end just like that after all of them finally had the chance to take a nice bath.
It took almost three hours for every one of them to get changed seeing them now inside the house all looking at Zach waiting for instructions since they all knew that they wouldn't fit inside the house to stay for the night.
"Truthfully speaking, I have never thought that there were really people who would choose to follow me despite only giving promises but I will tell you now that what I'm really saying is the truth. This place only has only one rule and that is not to ask questions about the supplies. If you can adhere to that, then we could live in harmony in this place." Zach said while looking at the people inside.
"I have said before that I only need your loyalty and trust in exchange for giving you food and shelter. In fact, the very reason I ask for such a thing was because I need your help be it now or in the future." Zach followed since he already planned on telling them the purpose why he had chosen to take them.
"This house and the building next to it was something I built two weeks ago and with that, I have seen the limitations of my capability. So, I think and then realized that time that there were no greater resources in the world but capable humans especially now that we are facing dangerous calamities every Monday of the week." Zach said.
"If we want to survive then we have to work together and for that reason, I have reached my hand out to you that day. I don't have any more requirements for as long as you remain loyal and put your trust in me, I promised that what I was planning to do with you was for the betterment of everyone. I just hope that all of you will abide to all that I'm saying as I don't plan on showing the side of me where I need to pull the trigger again." Zach followed as his face suddenly turned serious when saying the last sentence.
"You all probably might already know that there will be a new calamity on Monday. I don't know what kind of calamity we will be facing this time, so we need to prepare for it and we only have about two days left but let us leave that for tomorrow. Every one of you might already be thinking where to stay for the night but don't worry since we have several tents in here and other necessary things to get yourself warm." Zach said before looking at Zoey and Hannah wanting them to get the tents he had taken out earlier.
"So, for now, aside from the people I will call, everyone needs to start assembling the tents outside." Zach lastly said before he called out the skilled men who had followed him as they had many things to talk about with regard to his plan in the surrounding area.
Everything started moving as some people started doing what they were told while some were trying to help Vanessa and Hannah in the kitchen to prepare their dinner. Meanwhile, Zach and the rest of the people were very focused on something seeing the architect and carpenter start drawing some illustrations on a paper.
The following hours were bustling with noise as everyone was working their share of responsibilities before finally having their dinner and were now inside their respective tents so they could rest for the night as tomorrow would be a long day knowing that they had many plans to implement immediately.
Meanwhile, Zach was all alone in the middle of the night at a place not that far from the house looking at the mountainous logs and other materials in front of him. After talking about it with the people skilled in the area, they listed everything that they needed to start doing the project and fortunately, he had everything that they needed so it was not a problem.
"It's really a good decision to allow them to follow with me." Zach muttered upon thinking about the ideas that they were sharing a while back which he learned many things. He then just thought of wanting to find for more in the near future once everything is settled.
With that, Zach left the place as he headed to where their shooting practice area, and took every gun to his inventory before finally heading inside the house since he too was too tired for the day and badly wanted to lie on the bed but instead of resting, he was caught up with something after Hannah's worries turn into something more.
