Ever The Contrarian - THE END

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

A week later, Mercury was screaming her throat out. Literally. And clapping too. clapping till her palms had big red welts. Because her friend was having a big, golden, jeweled crown lowered onto her head. Mags was clapping right next to her, wearing a dashing suit. Nox was wearing a red suit too, but this time he had a new hairstyle that let his ears show since the pardoning of elves had been Iodine's first move as emperor. The crown prince was standing next to them, but not the crown prince anymore - she got to call him Gotas now, and he was looking shabby in common clothes but still beaming brightly. Mercury smiled.

And a week after that still, Nox dashed desperately down the street, into a shabby building squished between two bigger buildings. He slammed open the door to see 70 people - his fan club. "I… Need… your… help…" He gasped, and they all squealed simultaneously. From this small, shaggy building squished between two bigger ones, 70 ear-splitting screams of joy emitted. Of course! anything for Nox!

The next day, Mercury cluelessly held Nox's hand as they walked down a peach orchard. After the coronation, Mercury had said bye to her friend - but don't worry, the plentiful amount of teleportation scrolls that both sides had ensured frequent visits. "What is it? Nox?" Mercury asked, and Nox didnt reply. Weird. "Uhm? Nox? What now?" Mercury asked, as they stopped, in the middle of the orchard. Suddenly, Nox dropped to one knee. WHAT THE HECK!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH–

Mercury gasped and covered her mouth. "Mercury, Uhm. I don't know how to say this, but… I love you." Mercury gaped at him for a minute, and Nox clenched his fists. Oh, the sting of rejection. Let's take a look at our MC, though.

Mercury had always slightly suspected it. But, who in the world would ask their best friend if they loved them? Not her. She didnt. Now, she was gaping at Nox so much her jaw was growing sore. She swallowed. Now wasn't the time though - something was way more important. "I need more time. But I like you too." Mercury said sheepishly, leaning forward to kiss Nox on the forehead. Her heart almost burst, so she dashed down the familiar pathway again, her feet following the worn-out trail before Nox could say anything else. But he didnt follow her. Instead, he just rubbed his forehead, muttered something under his breath, and sat down on the ground, where he stayed, smiling and smiling.

Her feet dashed down the trail again, until she was standing in front of an old, worn-out cottage. Her cottage. She opened the front door to collapse on the mattress near the floor. Books littered the ground in high shelves. Mercury covered her face with her hands as she tried not to scream. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL! EBVRBVORBOUYQBRUYVBRb — and then the author reached through the fourth wall to pat her on the head. "you handled that well, darling. I would have exploded." The author aids sympathetically, but Mercury didnt move her hands off her face. "Oh well. The work is done. You have plenty of time now." The author said gently, still stroking her head, and then finally reached to close back the fourth wall. "And not just that. Darling. You have all the time in the world now." One final sentence remained, yet to be spoken.

"It's over, we've finally reached the end." And with that, the fourth wall closed. Once and for all.
