CHAPTER 23

It did not take too long for the tour to come to an end. Ryker handed her a stack of files as oer Arsenio's others.

"Once you are done with reading and sorting them out, you can go to his office to make your report. Also, these will help you to learn the ropes around her," Ryker told her.

Scarlett smiled and nodded. "Alright. When am I expected to finish them?" She quickly asked before he had the chance to leave.

"He didn't say. He just said to make sure you get them done for your own good. I suppose the sooner the better cause as his personal secretary, you will be going with him to meetings, conventions and lots more. So it will be wise if you were to know about the business," Ryker explained.

"But that's why you are here, right? Why do I need to follow him to all those functions?" Scarlett questioned.

"Hahaha, Secretary Davis. This handsome assistant has more urgent matters that will be assigned to me by the boss. In that case, I won't always be there."

"And do not forget your contract does not only bind you both in business but personal life too. That's why you are called his personal secretary," Ryker further said with an emphasis on personal.

"Sigh. Alright then. I better get to work. I can't disgrace my boss," Scarlett said as she sat behind the black office desk.

"That's the spirit. Good luck with that. And if you have anything you are not clear with, I'm just a few steps away. Feel free to ask questions."

"I will. Thank you so much."

That being said, Ryker took his leave to allow her to settle into the new environment and get her head into the game. As for Scarlett, as soon as she was left alone, she took that as an opportunity to look around her office.

It was big enough room for her to work efficiently. Aside from her work desk and chair, there was a tall metal structure where she guessed files and some important documents should be kept.

"Comfy and private. At least something I like aside from this morning's scene. Well, let's get to work, Scarlett."

Ryker went to Arsenio's office immediately after addressing Scarlett on what to do. He knocked and waited for a go-ahead to enter the office.

"Come in."

"I'm done with the necessary introduction and instructions on what she is to do" Ryker gave a quick report as he locked the door behind him. Then he went ahead to take a sit.

"Hmm. How is she adjusting to this morning's incident?" Arsenio asked.

"She seems to be taking it fine. But it is something she won't be able to forget," Ryker answered.

"Just when I thought her being under my wing will prevent her from troubles. Instead, it is the first thing she got into," he mumbled.

"Let's just hope she can also hold her ground against any trouble that may come her way in here. At least, it is not life-threatening."

"Hmm."

"It seems like you really do care for her, Arsenio," Ryker pointed out.

"Don't read too much into my actions, Ryker. I just need to find out something. Once I'm done, I will let her go."

"Still worried about being pulled to her, huh?"

"I guess. Anyway, any news about the dark council members and Asani?" Arsenio switched the topic.

"Nothing really. But it's like they have suddenly become quiet. I can't help but think something happened," Ryker spoke with an expression of thought.

"Whether they plan or not, they should be ready to face my wrath once I've found that key," Arsenio stated with raw determination in his voice.

Later that day, minutes before the lunch break, Scarlett was done with way more than half of the file given to her. There were just three left out of twenty given to her.

As she read, she had her notebook with her, taking notes of what was necessary and also coming up with solutions where she found a problem.

"Phew. This is taking longer than I thought. Thankfully, I will be done before lunch and hopefully report to Arsenio without taking much of lunchtime," she spoke to herself.

In the next few remaining minutes to the time, she willed herself to finish. Once she was done, she arranged the file and carried them all. Then she left for Arsenio's office.

Just as she had hoped, Scarlett did not spend much time in there as Arsenio himself did not waste her time. And she was not sure of it but she thinks she saw a look of good impression on his face.

Scarlett pondered on that as she walked to her office.

"Uhm, excuse me, newbie," a voice pulled Scarlett out of her train of thought.

She halted in her steps and raised her head to see a young woman that should be around the same age as her or a bit older.

"Hi, good afternoon," Scarlett greeted with a polite smile.

"Hello. I don't mean to bother you. But I'm coming from the assistant's office and I wanted to use this opportunity to ask you a quick question. It's more like a request though," the woman asked with her smile still intact.

"Sure, no problem."

"Okay. So since you are new here and it's lunchtime already... I was wondering if you would love to join me and a few of our colleagues at the cafeteria on the middle floor."

"Oh," Scarlett uttered.

"Yes. Well, it will help you settle in and it won't hurt to make some new friends, right?"

"No, not at all. I will live too. Would to give me a minute to grab my lunch from my office?"

"You already have lunch?" The lady asked.

"Well, yeah. I wasn't expecting an invitation from a co-worker on my first day."

"I see. Alright, go on. I will wait for you here," the woman approved.

"Great. Thanks," Scarlett smiled before rushing to get her lunch from the office.

'Turns out my day won't be pretty bad all through after all.'
