Chapter 2

“No one’s going to recognize us. We look like a couple of peasants who have been working in the fields.”

Reno agreed. “If anyone stops us, just keep your head down and let me do the talking.”

“Of course. You look like a boy in that outfit.”

“I figured we wouldn’t get noticed as much if we looked like a young couple. We’d be watched as two women without an escort.”

“Good idea, Reno. Let’s go down to the river. I love to watch the water flow by, and we can sit in the sunshine.”

They walked across the fields and through the bushes until they finally came to the river.

“Oh, it’s so peaceful here. I wish we could come here every day.”

“I don’t see why we can’t,” Ella said as she hiked her skirt up over her knees so she could feel the sun on her legs. “We’re not prisoners. Or at least they tell us we’re not. Sometimes I wonder, though. I think Gundy wants me to be.”

“You’re being silly. Of course he doesn’t.” Reno drew her trouser legs up, too, to catch the sun.
