22 The Ten-Tailed Fox III

This is impossible. I, a nine-tailed fox, evolved?

Among tailed foxes, or among youkai in general, evolution is quite rare.

Usually, a nine-tailed fox will only be born by birth of another nine-tailed fox. That was the case for me. Both of my parents were nine-tailed foxes and I was their only child. Our birth rate is very scarce, my daughter's birth was a blessing, I only expected to have children during my third century just like my mother.

I don't know what it requires for an eight-tailed fox to evolve to a nine tails, but I know that evolving into a ten tails is next to impossible.

My parents always said 'If there existed a ten tails, it would probably be the god of our race' a divine body that is not formed even once in ten thousand years. What's more ridiculous is that I didn't even notice. I feel better, I feel healthier, I feel stronger... but at the same time, it feels natural. 

I won't delude myself… this boy made me evolve. 

'Ray… I can never let you go'.

I had doubts, I even thought about making this a one-time thing; enjoy myself to the fullest with my saviour and then return to my home with my daughter. You're young and I'm old… you have a whole life ahead of you while mine is locked in Japan with a daughter to raise and a country to protect.

Heracles and Jeanne D'arc? One is a mythical Greek hero and demigod, the son of Zeus if I remember correctly, and the other is a French Saintess an ancient legend of the Catholic Church.

I engraved those names in my mind. Now I know four members. Those two and the two I fought one year ago, the one with the spear and the one with the misty sacred gear. This is the information I had requested, he has decided to stand on my side. 

"What they want is to get rid of you and have another Youkai take the Leylines of Kyoto to plan an eventual uprising against the Shinto Faction, Japan is also not the only territory they're attacking, apparently they're targeting the underworld too".

"Yes… I cannot leave this territory for as long as I'm the medium of faith".

That's sad, so she can never visit any other countries? She's shackled to this place eternally. It is a bit disheartening. 

"Hmn… how are the leylines passed down?"

"They're flows of faith that need a medium to travel from the human world into Takamagahara. I'm that medium and the only one to pass them down is with a ritual that involves Amaterasu-sama, once my daughter is mature enough or if I die; she shall inherit them from me".

"What do you think we should do?"

"You're asking me?" my brows tilted.

"You're my lucky charm, I want to know your opinion~".

I sighed, I guess this is her new way of addressing me. Let me see... what to do with Khaos Brigade?

"There is nothing to do for now. We wait for them to attack again. When they do, my mother and I will help you erase them with full force. You should try to hold a steadier position and grow the strength of your forces because we don't know their exact numbers and from what I could see, your Onmyouji are feeble and easy to disrupt"

She retained a pensive gaze, at any point did her delightful eyes break contact with mine.

"A frontal confrontation?" 

"Yes. We don't know how many there are or where they're based. We could act as undercover agents for a while after pretending to accept their offer, feed them fake information about your movements and plan an ambush… but that's a hassle I'd prefer not partake in"

"What's so funny...?" I pinched her waist in retaliation, were my thoughts so naive?

"But don't you think all that being undercover and having to pretend... is it not a bit boring? I'm not in the business of stress... I like to relax, take things steady... hold beautiful cute little things".
