1 CH I

Rain was pouring down in floods, the thin tin plates could not keep the water out. The room was getting flooded from various places, but I had no choice, this was the only living accommodation I could afford at my minimum wage job. For an aspiring singer with big dreams and very little in her pocket or else to support, I suppose am doing good.

I pulled out the few pots and pans I possessed to prevent much more damage. Emptying the filled up vessels into the adjoined bathroom; trying to prevent the bathroom from overflowing into the living area, it was a tiresome night. Between the little naps I got trying to remain dry on the scrawny sofa or whatever was left of it, my night was just dawning as the brightest. The first rays of the sun brought about a beautiful day with a lot of colours popping off of all the puddles on the road.

No sleep, tired, but I didn't have any excuse if I needed to keep a roof over my head, no matter its with holes, I had to get to work. I rushed to my day job as the cafe cashier, better than the server I guess.

"Hey Sylvia, how you today?""Hey George, yep it could have been better I guess. Anyways on with life""Don't fret dear, you will make it through. Just hold on!!!"

George was more like my grandfather. He helped this orphaned 21 year old refugee college graduate in NY when none else would. He was cute and cuddly like a teddy bear and always with the positive attitude and advice to help me see the light. He did try to give me a better place to stay at his cafe and home but I had declined that he had already helped me enough and I would make my own arrangements. Salary was not much but we didn't get enough customers either. He was struggling to keep it open, so any day now.

The day was dragging now almost to noon and I was just writing some song or trying to write more like it, when the wind whooshed into the cafe with a ding of a bell. It blew all my papers everywhere. I cursed to myself for not getting a notebook instead to write my songs and bent down to collect them quickly. Coming back up I was stunned looking into the most bluest pair of eyes you could have seen.

"Hi"

I was out of my admiring stare at this creature from out of this world. I gave him a name "bluey", hehe yeah I know.

"Hey, so what I can I get you?" I rasped out.

"Could I get a blueberry muffin and latte mocha to go please"

I clicked the order in and noted the cost of the bill to him. Handed the items ordered and he waltzed off into the sunlight. I was left in a daze staring after him. My mind kept going "wow! who has such blue eyes. It was a mix of ocean and the sky. Just wow!!!" I was mesmerized.I didn't have many friends or friend for that matter to discuss or even share nor a sibling. I was by myself since I can remember. I decided it was just life and moved on with my song writing again waiting for another customer to arrive.

The day passed off quickly and my shift was almost over by 5PM. I had to go and get ready for my night job now.

"Bye George, see you tomorrow.""Bye Sylvia. Good Night"

With that said I rushed out the cafe doors into the slightly drizzling evening to try and get a step closer to my dream. Maybe today is the day who knows right. One can always hope.

Dressed up in a floral gown to my knees and my jacket to keep the cold wet out I arrived at the nightclub where I sing. Yep, trying to achieve my dreams. Am given the opportunity to sing once a week my own songs. I enjoy it. Pay is not much better than the cafe, but I still can hold-on and hope for my dreams. Entering the club I noticed it was not a bad crowd, there were people of different ages and wages. All tired faces just trying to let go and enjoy the evening.

I began with a light number. Today I could sing my own song, I was excited. I presented the band with the chords for the song, oh yes I make my own music too. After the first few songs and very little applause we took a 5 minute break. I was much too excited to sing my new song to be put down by the uninterested people there. I kept my head high, with a bright smile on my face when I got to climb the steps to perform my own song.

I closed my eyes and imagined myself on a big stage in front of millions of people performing the same song. I sang my heart out and when the last note hit the piano and the song ended, there was complete silence. I opened my eyes to solemn eyes that were staring at me, but I could not understand their stares. My smile dropped a little. This was my last song for the night though. I thanked the audience and was about to walk off the stage, when someone from the crowd started to applaud, I looked up into the bluest eyes ever, again.
