Lamentations

Treasca left Brenton to his madness to check on her patients. She was pleased to see them all sitting up in bed being served a light soup by Delyn. The drake smiled at her pleased expression.

"You do fine work my lady. They seem whole, though I am sure still in need of rest." He said smiling. Many pairs of eyes watched her curiously as she went over to her first patient the young boy from her vision. He reached out with his tiny hand taking hers. She held it looking him over.

"Did you see my Gran? Did my brother make it here? Are there others?" He asked eyes wide with hope. The adults all turned to watch eyes full of the same child like hope. A tear fell down her cheek unbidden, and she looked down at the floor. She had to fight not to sob, these people needed her. She straightened and looked them in the eyes.

"You are all that we could find for leagues and leagues. Nothing survived, not one plant or shrew just the ten of you here." She said solemnly. A wail started from a woman near the end of the room, and seemed to spread to the others almost like a flame. The child pushed his way into her arms, and sobbed into her hair until he fell into a fitful sleep.

Brenton started at the sound of sobbing echoing throughout the halls. He dropped the scroll he was reading to the floor, and ran for the hall the survivors had been housed in. He ran. so fast he had to double back as he flew pass the door several steps. He watched Treasca sooth the child then she gently touched each of the others until soft sounds of sleep filled the room. Her face looked haunted when she turned to him. She pushed back out the door a shocked looking Delyn still standing frozen in the room.

"We need to talk you and I, alone." She said eyeing Delyn with sad eyes. He bowed and said.

"I will stay and look after our guests master." Brenton nodded in reply and turned to follow Treasca to his office. She sat in a pair of chairs near a large window, and Brenton sat opposite her. There was a very long pause before she finally spoke.

"I need you to listen to me without interruption. It is going to be very hard for me to say this, and I am sure it will be very difficult to hear. Brenton what you did by spiriting me away from my family was evil. I thought it was the worst atrocity that may be inflicted to me in my lifetime, but I am starting to think you may be the lesser of the true evils here. The world is far more dangerous than I could ever imagine, and I have not been in the least bit sheltered. Have you wondered why no Traveler's have dared enter your kingdom until now?" Brenton nodded he actually had wondered that for sometime now. Treasca sighed and told him the sad tale of her birth.
