17 Chapter 17: Opening Fire

Smashing the walls? David scoffed at their actions. He had already upgraded the walls to level two, and now those walls were not something they could break through.

However, their mention of the collapse of the load-bearing walls or even the entire building collapsing was indeed a problem. As David knew, in this extreme cold weather, many buildings had already collapsed.

But their residential area was a more upscale community. When it was built, various scenarios were considered. Not only is it comfortable to live in, but it can also withstand disasters for a longer period.

Yet, how long this resistance could last was hard to say. If it were just the cold, it might last a long time, but hail continued to fall from the sky, constantly exerting force on the buildings, making the already fragile buildings even more precarious.

Although David had modified the doors, windows, and walls of his home, his apartment was still on the seventeenth floor. If the stairs below collapsed, even if his home remained intact, he would fall straight from the seventeenth floor. If a house falls from such a height, even if he is not buried in the rubble, the impact would be unbearable, and he might even die!

Could he upgrade the earthquake resistance of the rooms below? However, David suddenly thought that being buried in the rubble might be good since then no one would bother him.

The only issue to consider was how to leave this place after the apocalypse ended. Of course, according to his current sign-in, this house would later be his independent kingdom, and he might never need to leave.

Thud! A duller sound came from ahead, the sound of them hammering the walls. David's mind raced, and he used his floating surveillance to capture these people, spotting William.

He hated this man the most! William moved slightly in the crowd. Although still towards the inside, David thought he could hit him from a good angle.

He walked to the wall and conjured the Penetration Ring, simultaneously drawing his handgun. The handgun only had ten bullets, and he had to use them carefully until he got a new supply. But for William, he was willing.

Using the surveillance to locate William, he quietly placed the Penetration Ring in an unnoticed spot, and the next moment, a fist-sized ring appeared in front of David. This was the Penetration Ring, which allowed him to shoot through one side of an object to the other.

Using this, he didn't need to worry about his shooting skills. Just extend the muzzle into the ring and pull the trigger. Since everyone was focused on the hammering, no one noticed the small hole that appeared in a corner.

David pulled the trigger— Bang! At that moment, William was intently watching the wall being hammered, his heart racing with excitement. If the wall broke, they could find food. He had longed for David's food, the delicious aromas drifting from David's home, driving him nearly mad.

Whenever he thought of himself eating tough chicken breast meat while David enjoyed hotpot, surrounded by warmth and feasting on meat and wine, he felt like burning up with jealousy.

Sometimes, he didn't even feel the cold outside; his heart was burning with envy. But it was futile; that door was like a chasm separating heaven and earth, an impassable barrier.

Recently, he had sent his daughter to knock on David's door again, but David had firmly decided not to open it. Even if Mia was starving at his doorstep and he promised no one else was around, David wouldn't open the door.

How could he be so heartless? To let a small child starve at his doorstep! William clenched his fists. His wife had committed suicide the day before. She couldn't stand this life anymore. Even though William kept saying that Charles's people would arrive soon and they would be saved, his wife looked at him with pitiful eyes.

When he woke up the next day, she was gone. She had jumped from the building, leaving only him and his daughter. William hated this world. Why was it so cruel to him? They just wanted to survive, but why wouldn't God give him this chance?

His daughter was really starving. Although they had some food left, it was split between three people, and they had never eaten their fill. Ironically, they survived this long because his wife's suicide saved them a portion of food.

The near-mad William stared ahead, oblivious to the dark muzzle aimed at him. Just as he was about to continue watching the hammering, a gunshot rang out, followed by a terrible scream! "Ah!"

An ambush?! Samuel quickly drew his gun, thinking these people were attacking them, but upon scanning the crowd, he saw everyone's panicked faces and no one holding a gun. Instead, someone in the crowd was wailing.

Samuel remembered this man, who had said he was David's neighbor. Now, he had been shot in the left arm. "What happened?!" Jones immediately said, "Who shot William?" No one answered; who knew what had happened? Even William himself didn't know. He only felt an excruciating pain spreading from his arm to his heart. The intense pain made him scream like a slaughtered pig.

The pain was unbearable! Everyone in the corridor scattered in panic, fearing the gun and not wanting to be the next victim. "Damn it! Who was it?" Samuel was furious, pointing his gun at the others: "Who fired the gun just now?"
