Turning Tables

The directness of the words of the policeman hit Doe faster than she imagined.

Frozen, her heart racing and her eyes narrowed, she wondered, searching deeply within herself what was up.

What did this guy know about her? And for a fact, how did he even know that she went to that street and always had a paper bag with her? More so, he knew that she played a game of chess. Perhaps she could have just taken it all as something that was basically a mistaken identity but this man… this officer Jonas had specifically mentioned that the person she played with was Isaac.

Her heart missed a beat now. Was Isaac safe?

What had they done with him? What did Isaac do to have to warrant the police attention on him? She found her lips quaking while her heart raced, pounding furiously against her chest. Her muscles twitched as she fought hard to compose herself.

She wanted to ask about Isaac. But doing so, would that not put her at a risk? What if this whole thing was just to spook her into confessing who she had always played out?

And if she did that, not that she Ads not already doing that, wouldn't raise further questions? Like how she was able to afford a house… no, not a house… a mansion as beautiful as this one in a very rich neighborhood.

Certainly, she could not lie her way out as being a commercial sex worker. That would not fit.

It hadn't even fit when she had told that to Isaac.

Doe felt cornered. For the first time since she had seen her father die before her eyes, she felt helpless, her reasoning fleeting in a moments noticed

She gasped softly, trying to steady her breathing. Her head is filled with all sorts of imagination now. She imagined the FBI bursting into the gates after Officer Jonas with their guns raised and their regalia of intimidation.

They would raid her place, break through her sacred stash and at the end, she would be whisked away in police cuffs. To spend the rest of her life in whatever hell they prepared for her.

She exhaled and then shut her eyes. She had to fight it. She was the genius here. And she was going to find a way to throw this officer off her scent. She just had to.

"Uh… officer, I am sure I do. It know what you are talking about." She said to him.

"You don't know?" Officer Jonas turned around, his eyes still searching into her. "But you acted like you knew something. You froze up. Usually, that is something that criminals would do when they know they are cornered already. Then they look for a lie to tell, to bail themselves out."

"Are you slandering me, Officer?" Doe asked. "I am pretty sure the human rights court would not like to hear something like that emanating form the police right? I can't imagine how it would be for you, your family to have you sued from all the international courts you could ever imagine." Doe exhaled, threatening.

"Uh.. " Jonas backed up now.

He exhaled, watching her with more interest. It appeared he had stumbled into a beehive now. And her reaction was sharp.

"That's not what I mean."

"You can't accuse me of anything if you don't have evidence. To do that is the equivalent of identity slander. You could lose your job for that. I can guarantee that." Doe said with a cold look in her eyes.

Before her eyes, Officer Jonas took another step backwards. She liked it, his physique, his intimidating aura was dissipating as he bent under the weight of her threat.

It was not just an empty threat as she could see that he bought it.

After all, for her to live in a neighborhood like this, meant she had the money to even sue the state if she needed to do that.

And judging from the reaction of the officer, she was sure he did not want to escalate things like that.

Which was good for her. It would get him off her scent.

However even as she did that, she knew that it would strike another bell of curiosity in Officer Jonas' heart.

For her to outrightly threaten him without first trying to deny or deflect the situation looked like there was something fishy after all. She narrowed her eyes and then lightened her expression with a faint smile.

"I can assure you.." Doe started. "You have the wrong person. There are a lot of blacks in that street as you know. Any of them could go out to play chess with somebody named Isaac." She mentioned. "I am too rich to be bothered with a life like that." She said, cocking her eyes and then crossing her arms for the umpteenth time.

"And I would appreciate it if you did not try to bring any accusation of whatever to my doorstep. That is, if you do not want to lose your job." She nodded solemnly.

Officer Jonas swallowed as he took one step backwards. His entire composure was broken.

Naturally, he would have held on. But being that he had just finished from the presence of a Maxwell, Jim's father, he did not have the stomach for another intimidating atmosphere that was not his own.

Still, he was curious about her. This harmless pretty lady seemed to be a whole dose of danger. And the way she was all natural about it, heck, there was nothing natural about that.

He would have to find answers.

"Uh… I'm sorry. Like you said, there is a misunderstanding. And I won't bother you." Jonas said as the turned around, a fleeting smile on his face. "Remember that if you have any trouble, you can always call the police." He said.

Then turned around to hand her a card.

Doe looked at his outstretched hand with a string eye. Then on to the card. It was a complimentary card, one that contained his number and his details on it. She squinted at it, not sure whether to get it.

She was not a fan of the police. And always, she tried to stay clear from them. That was why even when she parked her cars in the wrong spots, she never returned to that car because she knew she'd be booked. And anytime that would cause her to have a discussion with a Force man was against her rules.

Now, she was having an offer of a force man ID. It did not strike well with her. Eventually, one way or the other, she may be forced to have to contact him. Or he might see it as a leeway to still keep in touch with her.

She didn't want that. Her instincts screamed for her to reject it.

But against her rationality, she stretched her hand to pick it.

"I hope that when I have to contact you, it won't be because of a lawsuit." She said. "Nice talking to you, Officer uh…" She Shook her head, urging him to speak.

"Jonas. Officer Jonas." Jonas chipped in and then nodded to her. "As it was with you." Before heading to the gate.

Way to go, Doe!

Smartly played. But our guy is curious. You mind staying off Middletown street for a while?
