A Visit From the Police

BEEP!

Beep!!

"Hello boss, if you can hear me, we have some visitors from the police."

The intercom buzzed on with some static even as the dark skinned lady on the queen bed sprawled awake.

She yawned, stretching both hands and legs in the white and blue spotted pajamas she was wearing. Slowly, she came to her senses, hearing the intercom buzz out again, as her eye widened up to clarity.

She reached to her bed no, to the bed stand which was by her side and picked the receiver.

What police? What was the police doing here?

Her eyes scanned about the room. The whole room was messy, the bedsheet rumpled here and there. She had shared it with Amber the night before. But not before the girl had made her drink some alcohol.

Even though she was weak to alcohol, she had tried to put up a front in front of Amber. Just so that Amber would not go about laughing at her and calling her some kind of need.

Unfortunately, Amber aaa up and she was yet to wake. Or just woken up.

Her heart skipped a beat now as she jerked up. The bed, nearly toppling the telephone she held. She gasped, searching for any trace for Amber now.

Where was Amber? Doe panicked. She had secrets in her house and if Amber came to find them, well, she did not desire to imagine something like that. She jumped form the bed, determined to find where the new visitor was only to hear the intercom buzz once more.

"Hello boss, if you can hear, kindly tell me what to do?" The voice said.

She inhaled air through her teeth and then walked to the side of the bed, picking up the telephone. One glance at it, she knew that the security guard was only doing his best as his work duties had spelt out for him.

She had to bear with the way he had jumped her out of bed because she knew that she had expected this from him. At least, to keep her one step ahead do whatever it was tang would come her way.

"Hi, Thomas, good morning. The police? What happened?" She asked

When did the police come? Had her house been broken into or what?

The alarms she had set in place did not get triggered off so that meant the house was not broken into.

So then, why would the police be here?

"Yes, boss. I actually tipped the police about some girl. Who you know," the security guard slowed down on his report. It was obvious, he was fidgeting and nervous about what to say next. "She happens to be the Amber you walked into your house."

"Okay… you should have cancelled the report then? Amber was not a problem else I would not have entered the house with her." Doe yawned, stretching out a hand as she sat back on her bed.

"Actually, I did that. But the policemen here are convinced that this is not a case they can ignore. They feel like I was acting under duress and want to speak with the mistress of the house. And possibly with the… you know, with your friend." The guard reported.

"Okay! Tell them I would be there soon." Doe sucked in air through her teeth.

She was not a fan of the police force. Not since when her father had been mistaken for an armed robber and shot.

Even though she knew that if her father did not resist and try to come back to the house, she would not have had to meet him with a gunshot wound that day. But he resisted and that must have been what prompted the policemen to open fire.

Still, the police took the life of her father. That was how she wanted to see it. And now that there was some policemen at her gate, she felt very uneasy.

Especially since this time, she actually was into stuff she could not be open about.

She sighed, dropping the receiver and the telephone back to the stand as she rose up. Buttoning the first three buttons of her shirt, she yawned once more, walking off for the door.

The police could wait, right now, she had something else on her mind.

That was Amber.

That girl was always so inquisitive and if she was not reined in, she would stumble in on what gave her the wealth as at now. She could not afford to allow her see it. Not in the least.

She hurried out into the living room only to pause now as the sweet smelling aroma of foods being cooked slammed deliciously into her nose. She heaved out in relief now, knowing that Amber was cooking.

At least, that meant that Amber did not stumble into her work place. But she could not be sure, even at that.

She hurried into the kitchen meeting a trigger eager Amber humming happily as she fried something in a pan.

One minute of gazing, she noticed Amber was actually making up fried eggs, waffles and bacon. And it smelt good.

When last did her house have this homely feel? It was like forever.

"Good morning, Amber! What are you doing?" Doe snickered as she sauntered into the kitchen, going to hug her friend hy ye waist.

"Why? I am hacking into the FBI." Amber chuckled.

However to Doe, her eyes widened just then at the words Amber said. Her heart skipped a beat and she pulled away instantly, frightened.

It could not be. Has Amber seen her work place already?

"What did you say?" Doe asked, cocking her head while narrowing her eyes.

"I said I was hacking into the FBI." Amber paused, frowning at this display.

She dropped the cooking spatula and cleaned her hand against the blue apron over her nighttime, while shaking her head at Dos.

"Why are you talking… why you acting like yuu saw a ghost? I was being sarcastic, sheesh!" She replied.

"Sarcasm eh?" Doe exhaled, smiling in relief.

"Oh, come on. I always love your cooking." She snuggled in, hugging Amber tightly while burrowing her head into the left side of the friends neck.

"Haha! Okay…" Amber laughed heartily, using her hands to push her gently off. "If you continue hugging me like this, I may catch feelings." She smirked.

"Boss!!" The hanging telephone by the refrigerator rang out, the voice of the guard echoing. "The policemen are getting impatient. Should I usher them in or would youu…"

"No, I'll come soon. Please hold them a bit." Doe said, picking it up.

She had hurried across the kitchen space to the telephone to issue an order. Usually, with the police, she tried her best to avoid encounters with them. Now that Amber was in her house and the cause of this one, it was hard to wriggle her way out of it.

"Amber, I'm going to see the police. You caused quite a stir in the neighborhood, you know."

"It's not my fault! The big head of a guard should have just let me in immediately."

"Amber, he doesn't know you." Doe cut in.

"Well, can't he see the family resemblance in our faces?" Amber groaned, rolling her eyes.

"Amber, we don't look alike."

Amber smirked, shaking her head as she focused on dishing the already cooked meal.

"Well, go deal with them. If you spend so much time and your food gets cold, just let me know when to microwave the meal." She added.

Meanwhile, outside the house.

Jim Maxwell junior and Jonas Rocky sat in the black SUV staring impatiently at the guard house where the security guard kept on napping to a telephone.

Jim shook his head at this, it was getting too long since they had come in here. And this guard seemed to be having fun letting them stay parked in front of the gate but doing nothing.

"Ah! I wish we could just barge into the house like that." Jim complained, straightening his collar.

He wore his glasses and had the outlook of an observer just like he had been in the park earlier. His friend, Jonas, looked more like a police man as he held the wheel and turned over to watch the gate.

"Yeah, yeah… You are a Maxwell, you can do that and get away. Not me. I need a warrant before I can barge in." Jonas replied.

"But it's already taking so long." Jim yawned out. "Is this the case I'm supposed to be interested in? It's boring." He complained, pulling out his iPad now.

"Well, not everything about the police is interesting. Don't act like a newbie." Jonas complained. "Whoa, here we go. Someone is finally stepping out."

"Yeah, yeah. Scuttle over. I need to get home." Jim said, without glancing at the approaching lady coming to the gate.

"Really?" Jonas said and got out of the driver's seat, walking over to the side where Jim was. He leaned over while the latter moved to the wheel and ignited the engine.

"Jim, look. I can Swear, she looks exactly like that black bum girl at Middletown street." He said.

"Yeah, yeah, she's a bum. She can't live in a house like this." Jim ignored his comment, focusing on the rear window as he reversed the car out from the gate.

"Just look first and tell me…"

VROOOMMMM…

"Tch… So impatient!" Jonas sighed bitterly, watching the SUV speed away without as much as a second glance from Jim. "That's his freaking bum girl. Or the cousin. Or maybe my eyes are just paining me." He complained, shaking his head as the lady approached him.

"Good day, officer, I am Doe. I live here." Doe flashed a smile to him.

Ohkayyyyy… That was close.
