Ch 9 - Selecting The Genres For "The Demo"

The expansive golden grid stretched endlessly, a blank canvas waiting to be painted upon. Nexus stood at its center, thoughts swirling in his mind. Every great creation began with a single choice, and as he prepared to craft his very first game, that initial decision weighed heavily on him. What type of game should he manifest into this reality? The scope, the scale, the experience—all needed to be defined.

Reflecting on the information Lumos had provided, Nexus was caught in a conundrum. Crafting an expansive, large-scale game would require a significant amount of the precious Origin EC, an expenditure he wasn't entirely prepared for. On the other hand, a smaller game, though less taxing on resources, might not allow him to express the depth and breadth of his vision.

Sensing his master's internal struggle, Lumos offered, "Master Nexus, may I offer a suggestion?"

Nexus, appreciating Lumos's initiative, responded, "Of course, Lumos. Your insights have always proven valuable."

With Nexus's affirmation, Lumos continued, "Consider choosing a genre that resonates across realities, one that's universally recognized. By drawing inspiration from existing genres, you can ensure a blend of familiarity and innovation in your creation."

Nexus considered this, his eyes brightening at the suggestion. "You're right, Lumos. Given my limited exposure to the gaming realm, due to my preoccupations in political spheres from the memories of my past life, it might be wise to draw from what's already established."

Nexus then ordered, "Lumos, show me the various genres that exist. I want a comprehensive understanding, complete with their core essence and the experiences they offer."

In response, the dimension around Nexus shifted. Panels floated into existence, each dedicated to a different gaming genre. Detailed descriptions, key elements, and visual representations filled each panel, providing Nexus with a panoramic view of the vast world of gaming.

With renewed focus, Nexus began to browse, his fingers gliding over each panel as he absorbed the information. He took his time, immersing himself in the descriptions, weighing the potential each genre held, and pondering which would best serve as the foundation for his inaugural game.

As Nexus skimmed through the panels, genres like Role-Playing, Action-Adventure, and Simulation floated past, each offering its own allure and challenges. The depth of some genres intrigued him, while the dynamism of others caught his eye. But he was particularly drawn to a couple of genres that seemed to resonate with his creative intuition.

The first was a panel titled "Platformer." In this genre, players navigated levels and overcame obstacles, typically with a focus on precise jumping and movement. Vivid representations showed characters leaping between platforms, dodging dangers, and confronting adversaries.

He then explored the realm of "Puzzle" games. From color-matching challenges to logic-based conundrums, these games demanded cerebral prowess, luring players into a web of increasing complexity, where each solution led to a more intricate puzzle.

As his exploration continued, his journey then led him to the "Wave" genre. Here, players faced back-to-back, intensifying waves of adversaries. Strategy, adaptability, and survival instincts were paramount, with players often strategizing on the fly to fend off relentless assaults.

The "Rogue-Like" genre piqued his curiosity next. Focused on dungeon exploration, the procedurally generated levels ensured each playthrough was distinct. With the looming threat of permadeath, every decision had monumental consequences.

His attention then rhythmically shifted to "Rhythm" games. Perfectly timed actions in tandem with enthralling music tracks were at the core of these games. As the tempo escalated, so did the challenge, demanding impeccable timing from players.

Next, the "Tower Defence" genre came into view. Central to this genre was the strategic placement and upgrading of defensive towers to repel waves of invaders offered a mix of strategy and action. Anticipating enemy patterns and crafting impeccable defenses were crucial to success.

Briefly, he also explored "Adventure" games, which seamlessly blended exploration, puzzles, and narrative into a cohesive experience, taking players on journeys filled with mystery and wonder.

Concluding his exploration, the "Sports Simulation" genre presented itself, simulating real-world sports with authentic experiences, strategies, and reflexes.

After delving deep into the vast ocean of genres, Nexus paused, absorbing all that he had learned. There were far more genres than he'd imagined, each with its unique allure. While many of them held the potential to serve as the foundation for his first game, none felt quite right for conveying the depth and richness he envisioned.

He was lost in thought, sifting through the genres in his mind, when a burst of inspiration struck him. Could he not blend certain genres, adding innovative twists to craft a unique gaming experience?

However, the plethora of choices again weighed on him. Which genres to select? The decision was proving more daunting than he'd anticipated.

Observing Nexus's contemplation, Lumos chimed in, "Master Nexus, if I may, why not commence with two or three core genres for your game's foundation? From there, you can progressively introduce more genres in the future. After all, as far as I know, no game is truly completed upon its initial release. Many of the most iconic games began with a solid foundation and then expanded and evolved over time, with updates and enhancements bringing them closer to the creator's ultimate vision. Perhaps you could do the same."

Nexus's eyes sparkled with realization. "Lumos, that's brilliant. I was so caught up in the idea of launching a perfect, all-encompassing game right from the outset. Your perspective is refreshing. Based on what we've discussed, could you recommend a couple of genres to start with?"

Lumos responded, "Certainly, Master Nexus. Given your requirements and vision, I would recommend starting with the 'Wave' and 'Tower Defence' genres. Both offer substantial depth and versatility, and I believe you can weave them together to create something truly unique."

Hearing Lumos's suggestion, Nexus paused, processing the depths of the recommendation. The two genres Lumos mentioned, though seemingly simple at first, held layers of intricacy and potential when looked at closely.

"Why specifically these two genres?" Nexus inquired, seeking a deeper understanding.

Lumos responded, "Certainly, Master Nexus. The 'Wave' and 'Tower Defence' genres possess distinct characteristics that can be harmoniously intertwined. Given the limited amount of Origin EC and your requirements, these genres provide an optimal balance. When designed with care and precision, they can lay a robust foundation that rivals any other genre in depth and engagement. Additionally, as your game matures, these genres offer flexibility, allowing seamless integration of other elements and genres you might wish to introduce."

Nexus pondered, his fingers tapping rhythmically on a nearby panel as he weighed the merits of Lumos's advice. "Your rationale aligns with the essence of what I envision for my game," he finally remarked, eyes reflecting a slowly crystallizing resolve.

Lumos, ever attuned to his master's emotions, sensed the shift in Nexus's demeanor. "It's my duty as your assistant Master Nexus. And I believe you have made your decision" Lumos observed.

Drawing a deep breath and meeting Lumos's gaze with unwavering intent, Nexus declared, "Yes, I've decided. The 'Wave' and 'Tower Defence' genres will be the bedrock upon which my game will be built. Your insights have illuminated the path, and I believe I can now finally make the game based on what I envisioned previously. A fun but challenging game that can make people excited for my future games."
