He had been accumulating some copies of rarer books from Canterlot Library inside the Lab. one of them being the same one Twilight used during her crazy time Paradox adventure.
He had no idea how she managed to create a paradox by making her younger self go back in time, to make her younger self go back in time, to make her younger self go back in time, and so forth, but he had no need for a paradox here. This spell technically worked on a similar principle as those time turners from Harry Potter, without the "don't speak with your younger self" part.
He wasn't going to go into details about time travel right now, but he knew that he couldn't change what he knew to already happen, or he'd cause a Paradox of his own, which did poses a slight chance of erasing him from existence. Unlike the Spell of Starlight Glimmer that could rewrite the timeline without affecting the ones included in the spell, this spell had no such fail-safes and if you for example killed your younger self, the least that would have happened would be your complete disappearance.
So that was also why he didn't check on Fluttershy's potential pregnancy.
Starfall checked through his notes on time travel, and after making sure he had everything right, He cast a slightly improved version of the spell, that promptly transported him back a few hours.
It was an unusual feeling, and his magical hiccup was certainly not amused with his action, because the moment he appeared in the past, he could feel his magic as a whole acting up like crazy.
It was an interesting reaction for sure, but he needed to act fast, because despite having improved the spell to increase the time spend in the past, he still had only a few minutes...
He walked out of the basement about to climb the stairs to the second floor when a sudden white blur slammed into him from the side, before in a flurry of feathers tried to hide behind him.
'Daddy!!! Say something to him! Philip is trying constantly pulling on my feathers!' Phoebe screamed in his mind just as the smaller green phoenix flew into the room through the window.
The two Phoenixes started to chase eachother and Starfall was about to help Phoebe, but remembered, he needed to hurry, so with a small apologetic expression, he turned to the stairs and left.
"Sorry Phoebe! You got this!" He said disappearing into the second floor as the White Phoenix groaned in helplessness.

She huffed and turned back to see the small phoenix pulling at her tail feather with his beak. She narrowed her eyes and her tail burst in white flames, before her entire body disappeared, the small phoenix following soon after, somehow having figured out how to follow her through fire travel...
Starfall approached the doors ready to act, but reminded himself to act undetected.
A quick invisibility spell and silencing spell was enough for him to safely walk inside.
He knew that he was a paranoid guy, but he also trusted the protective spells casted on the building. No creature would be able to come inside without him being notified about it...unless of course it's Starfall himself. He actually left a loophole for himself in the security, knowing that sometimes not knowing about something was what was need for a successful time travel.
Let's not discuss the fail-safes of the fail-safes though...
Casting the spell when the younger Starfall was about to reach his peak was the obvious conclusion, and he was happy when neither of the two noticed anything amis, to engrossed in their lovemaking.
