1 Prologue - Life's Good

It was a normal day. My mother – Vera Stonehead (Yes! I know! It's a weird surname) went out to buy some groceries and I didn't see my father – Kreiss Stonehead, the whole morning, as expected, since he is the 'Overlord'. A job that always takes most of his time.

So I decided to go through some of my dad's secret files in the hidden part of his study room at the end of the hallway, which are the only things left for me to read in this house.

"But Danton... Are you sure?"

"Dude, what do you take me for?!" I said in a hushed tone.

"Ben, I'll have you know that this isn't the first time I'm doing this. That is why I'm sure of what's behind this door."

I added making an expression filled with pride, but Ben still kept a perturbed look on his face that I ignored to continue the lock picking.

I am holding my favourite lock picking tools, which are: a fork, I bent the other three prongs; and an object that's a bit bigger than a needle and has a curve at the top of it, I think mom calls it a 'spake'? But whatever.

'Click'

I heard the lock mechanism unlock and so did Ben.

"W-Won't your mom be angry?" Ben said wearing a worried expression, "Danton please, I-I don't think this is a good idea."

"Don't worry, they won't find out. I'm good at this."

Ben is always the saint in matters like this because he doesn't want to get into trouble. Don't get me wrong, I don't trouble, I only just do what I want and what I have to do to get what I want.

One night, when I was six years old, my dad brought back home a boy that looked my age but is just a year younger than I am. He had glossy grey hair with pale skin and slim blue eyes that looked like they had no life left in them. He wore a white tunic that got to his feet making him look like he was supposed to be used as some kind of sacrificial offering of some religious group that had gone bananas or something. Likewise, he is an antisocial and somewhat introverted kid that looked like he'd gone through a lot despite his young age. Furthermore, he always cried about little things and that always got on my nerves because tears only signify weakness... my worst enemy. But, what shocks me the most about him is this feeling I get when he's around me, making me suspect he hasn't told me everything about his origin and past, even though we've lived together for six years now. The problem here lies in the fact that I can 'feel' it.

'Screeecchhh!'

The sound the old wooden door made could be heard throughout the whole hallway even though I tried opening it as quiet as I could.

"Be quiet to the extent you won't even hear your footsteps." I whispered to Ben, who just smiled and looked at me.

'Wasn't he against it just a minute ago? So why is he smiling now? Weird dude.'

I slowly walked in and to my amazement, I saw a man whose face I couldn't make out because the room was dimly lit.

He wore a black military suit and sat on the chair behind the wooden desk which had multiple files on top of it with a magic-crystal lamp.

The study room had only one window which was located on the left-hand side of the room. A large bookshelf with no space left was placed behind the desk and the chair made the study room look like a mini-library.

The walls were made out of bricks and had a few cracks here and there. Also, I could see the shelf hanging on the wall at the right-hand side of the room which housed my dad's blades encased in a material that allows one to see through it, glass; which was close to a battle uniform on an armour stand.

The man moved a bit forward, and I could make out his face. He has short burgundy hair and wine coloured eyes with a porcelain skin complexion, the clear skin on his face proves he is a very handsome man in his late-thirties to early-forties.

'Shit! It's dad' I muttered under my breath.

"What the hell are you doing here? Stupid brat." he said with a smile etched on his face.

I turned to look at Ben who was running and was already at the end of the hallway that was about seven to eight meters in length.

'Damn! He's fast, that chicken! So that's why he was smiling.' I thought, trying to think of how to get out of this without losing face in front of dad.

"I should ask you that, old skunk. Aren't you supposed to be out on some official duties?!" I said with confidence.

I saw an expression filled with anger plastered on my dad's face as he said, "Say that again if you're brave enough."

"Oh... are you sure about that? Old... skunk." I made a cheeky grin as I got into a stance to run.

As he stood up, I started running with all the speed I could muster.

As he chased me down the hallway; I was approaching the stairs where I couldn't afford to make an abrupt stop, so I jumped on the wall behind the stairs and propelled myself forward and sat on the stair railings using the momentum to slide down.

A hand touched the back of my head and the next thing I felt was my head screaming in pain as I was slammed face forward onto the wooden floor.

"Say that again kid, I dare you!" dad said, as he held my head onto the ground.

"Geht youh fildy hands orf meh, you ohld skurnk!" My words were muffled because my mouth couldn't move like how I wanted it to because dad's hand pressed my cheek against the floor.

"Oh! What was that? I couldn't hear" Dad spoke sardonically.

"S-sir! Please, I suggest you stop, bec--" Ben said with a slight hint of worry as he was stopped abruptly.

"Ben," Dad slowly freakishly turned his head to Ben who was standing at the entrance door. "Do you want to join him?"

Ben slowly backed away as I raised my hand to Ben and gestured for help.

"What... is... happening... here?"

As I heard a female voice, I became extremely happy that my saving grace has finally made her appearance.

She has beautiful long dark violet hair that is tied to the back of her head using the hair at the side of her head. She has plum slim eyes and looks like a lady in her early thirties with a fair skin complexion, in other words, she is very beautiful.

"Oh! Uhhh! Honey! I-It's not what it looks like." Dad said frightened; I laughed in my head because the almighty Overlord is afraid of his wife.

"How many times have I told you to stop bullying our son?" She said, with a calm scary smile on her face, implying that all is not well if he answers wrongly.

"H-He insulted me," dad said, then he gathered some resolve and added "If anyone is being bullied it's me. By his wife and son."

Mom shot him a glare that didn't need words to explain what it meant.

"Uh-Uhh! Danton! Are you alright son? I hope you've not hurt anywhere." Dad said while standing me up. He put his hand on my head, shoulders, then waist as he performed a random checkup on my body for injuries to act like he was caring for me.

He was kneeling with one leg in front of me, but his gaze was on mom as he smiled meekly to see her reaction.

"And you, how dare you to insult my husband?" mom turned her head a little for her gaze to land on me.

"I-I'm sorry dad," I said to my dad, but changed my expression as his gaze fell on me to one that says 'This isn't over'.

"*Sigh* Anyway, honey! I saw your colleague on my way back, and he told me to tell you: you don't need to go to the Kings' meeting; it's been postponed to next week." Mom said in a happy tone, making dad smile awkwardly.

"Well that's good, we can have dinner and spend some time together as we welcome a new member of our family." As Dad spoke he pointed at Rose, the female dog laying down at the corner of the couch.

She has been with us for the longest time now, ever since I can remember. She has white fur and a mark around her left eye that looks like a black sun with a circular cut out in the middle that remained white and is where her eye is.

"Is she pregnant?" I asked because if she was it is going to be shameful to not know all this time.

"Apparently she is, and has been for the past two years." My dad answered and smiled when he saw I and Ben's mouth wide agape.

"Are dogs normally pregnant for that long?" Ben asked, causing everyone's gaze to fall on him.

"N-No I, I just don't know that's why I'm asking." Ben added as he cocked his head.

We were just baffled that he spoke without stammering because it rarely happens and only happens when he wants to ask a serious question or maybe is talking to me.

""Pfft""

Everyone stifled a laugh before bursting out laughing because of the facial expression Ben had when he spoke, and even Ben himself started laughing.

"Ahahaha... Ben, Rose is not the regular type of dog that you see on the road" dad answered while cleaning the tears and trying to stop laughing.

Life was peaceful and normal. Everyone was happy. I couldn't even predict anything to go wrong. I ate my own words later that night.
