7 Chapter 7

Chapter 7

And the other reason is their wealth which is although low but still way higher than that of common folks around.

But first, she would need more demons to help her run the shop and protect its safety.

The hesitation in her mind was because they might betray her and backstab her as this was how the labor was in this city.

So, after thinking hard about it, she concluded that she would find young demons who are still immature to some extent and provide them with work.

Although it might seem like she would be conducting child labor it was not the case here.

First of all, there were no concepts and laws regarding child labor here.

Second, where she lived, in the slum city, the lives of these young demons were hellish as they barely get any food and would remain hungry for days, many of them would die of starvation and mana deficiency as well.

They had to eat trash and insects from the roads to survive and if that was not enough, they were always living in the fear of being attacked and killed by some demons in evil cycles.

There were many demons here who would be going through evil cycles daily roaming openly.

So, providing such children with well-established jobs that will enable them to earn money and food was a blessing for them.

Eve's mind was running furiously as she made many plans in her mind while side by side baking cookies passed by Noel who was admiring Eve secretly.

"Noel, can you listen to me for a moment, you remember my plan to buy a shop and get some workers, I think I got an idea and would need your help…"

"Of course, Lady Evelyn, I will do my best to make your plans come to success."

She said with a serious look on her face.

Err… Lady Evelyn? Why was she calling me lady?

Isn't it a noble title or a title usually servants refer to their masters as?

"Umm… Noel…?"

"Yes, lady Evelyn."

"Uhm, why are you calling me lady?"

"Ah! Please forgive me, my lady! How can I forget to explain this to you!? Allow me to elaborate. I have concluded that my life now belongs to you, at that day when you saved my life, I knew my life belonged to you and only you, without you, I would have been long dead so I have pledged myself to you for eternity."

Saying so she bent on one knee and took one of my hands in her hand as I was still contemplating what she just spouted when she kissed the back of my hand as a gesture of her loyalty to me.

"Wait, wait, wait, I thought demons were only allowed to follow a master only when they are defeated in strength and accept the opponent as their master!?"

Noel just calmly listened to me and nodded.

"You are correct, my lady, as expected from you, but allow me to add one more thing, a demon can also devote themselves to another demon if the demon owes their life or his/her life has found a meaning in serving the other demon."

"Please accept my eternal loyalty to you Lady Evelyn, any demon in my family has never broken an oath and as a proud demon from my family, I am willing to abide by it and follow you under any circumstances."

"What if I reject you?"

Noel got quiet for some time as I realized that I might have been too harsh with the phrasing of my words.

As I was about to apologize, she said.

"It's absolutely fine, Lady Evelyn, I shall not pester you anymore, I know I am a burden to you as of now but I am willing to improve myself so please just give me a chance… and even if you don't give me a chance, I will just kill myself as my life would no longer hold any meaning."

She spoke to me with desperate eyes as if begging to be given a chance.

But at the same time resolute.

'Argh, what did I put myself into!? I just wanted to help her a little, I never intended to make her my subordinate."

'The significance of serving someone forever is very high in The Netherworld and once pledged, they cannot back down for the rest of their lives.'

I contemplated and after some time I agreed.

"I agree then."

Noel's face was lit with joy as she heard my response.

"But call me Eve as Lady Evelyn sounds weird."

"As you wish, Lady Eve."

I feel that Noel deliberately didn't tell me about her taking an oath to serve me, this clever girl knew I would refuse outright when she was just a stranger to me…. Sigh, such a clever girl but I like her cleverness.

I then tell her about my plans to help both myself and the young demon children in need here.

I asked her to scout as many as she could while I will continue selling biscuits daily.

She seemed reluctant to leave me alone which kind of weirded me out as to how quickly she was getting attached to me.

She and I thus separated ways and did our jobs daily.

I started to change my work hours as well when I found some of the gangsters roaming around asking about biscuits from folks here and there and also changed my locations now.

Meanwhile, Noel brought two young demons with her.

Both of them were twin sisters, one of them had dark blue hair and golden eyes, with a pointy nose and small lips and pointy ears, while the other twin had greyish hair with dull silver eyes with the almost same appearance as her sister.

They were probably just a year younger than I was.

Both of them were chased out of their houses due to lack of food and thus getting abandoned.

They were fed by Noel and me and offered a job as well which they eagerly agreed to.

Both of them seemed to care about the other twin quite a lot as they always remained together most of the time.
