1 HEARTBREAK

Chapter 1

The McCarthy's Mansion (New York)

She stood in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection and asking herself questions. Her young and beautiful image imitated her every move, making her laugh as if she were losing her mind.

"What do I lack as a woman?" she asked herself repeatedly as she walked backward and sat on her bed. "Maybe marriage is not meant for me."

She bitterly lamented, tears streaming down her face. Her hair was a mess, but her room was as tidy as holy grounds. It wasn't that she was mentally ill or sick in the brain, but something greater troubled the beautiful girl.

She snatched a sleeping pills container and poured out its contents, but she hesitated and threw them out of her window, screaming as she pulled at her long hair.

Soon, there was a knock at her door. She wiped away her tears, trying to pretend that everything was fine.

"Come in," she allowed, "am I your guest now?"

She asked the tall and extraordinarily handsome gentleman in his mid-30s, standing at almost 5.5ft. She couldn't help but stare at him seductively.

For about ten seconds, all she did was gaze into his blue eyes. She snapped back to her senses when her eyes moved down to the documents in his hand. She knew her time had come, and there was nothing she could do about it but would give a try to resist.

"Olivia, you need to sign these documents before I go crazy!"

McCarthy yelled, throwing the documents at her. He was so cold. He glittered, but he wasn't gold.

Olivia was one among a hundred women who would still love McCarthy after knowing who he truly was. He was so cold and mean.

"You heard me screaming, and this is what you bring in? For the third time?" she cried, "I love you so much, McCarthy, and I can't leave you."

McCarthy's face began to drop. His eyes turned red as he grew angrier. Olivia was afraid, but she wasn't ready to give up on him.

Her love for McCarthy was unwavering; she was ready to risk her life. None of his bodyguards dared to look him in the eye when he was angry, but Olivia, madly in love, stood up to calm him down with a kiss.

"Fuck off! I said I don't need you. If you love me, just sign the documents, and that will make me happier than your kiss," he warned her and walked out, leaving the door ajar.

She raised her head, and all she saw were the nosy house cleaners bustling around the sitting room.

He went straight to his drawer and grabbed a brown envelope. On his way back to Olivia's room, his mother suggested going with him since she had some business to discuss with her.

For the past few weeks, her husband had only talked about divorce and nothing else.

Olivia didn't know why her husband wanted a divorce, whether he had a reason or not, she was ready to beg for forgiveness.

Not that she had a happy marriage, but a brutal and chaotic one. In the past month, she had even experienced an ectopic pregnancy.

She thought that was one of the reasons her husband wanted a divorce.

When she raised her head again, the woman she believed was her last hope was standing right in front of her with her husband and two security guards.

"Olivia, my love?!" Matilda laughed.

"Yes, Ma'am," she respectfully responded.

She quickly pulled her bed sheet to cover the divorce documents on the bed, but it was too late. The woman had already seen them.

"Let me have those," she took them herself and glanced through them, pretending she knew nothing about it. "What!" she screamed, covering her red-painted lips with her handkerchief.

"Ma'am, he doesn't mean it. We just had a misunderstanding, and I hope we can settle everything. I love your son."

"That's not why I'm here, girl." Her face suddenly changed, just as her son had transformed a while ago. "I lost something precious, the first thing my husband gave me when he met me."

As soon as she finished talking, the security guards started searching Olivia's room, throwing things up in the air.

McCarthy was completely unaware of the situation, but he remained silent and observed what was going on.

As they waited for the lost or stolen item to be discovered, their hearts pounded in their chests, but Olivia was busy thinking about how to retrieve the divorce documents from Matilda's hand.

"I think I found something!" one of the female security guards exclaimed, catching everyone's attention.

"Let me see that."

Matilda took the glittering diamond ring, pressed it against her heart, and kissed it.

"How could you do this to me, Olivia?"

Olivia was shocked to her core and couldn't utter a word. It felt like a live staged drama or a movie scene unfolding before her eyes. She looked up at her husband, who was also suppressed and angry.

"Olivia! You stole from me?" Matilda cried once again, falling into her son's chest and weeping bitterly.

"Did you do this to my mother after cheating on me!?" McCarthy asked.

"Do you also think I'm a thief, McCarthy? I am your wife, for God's sake."

"Not anymore! You cheated on me!" he yelled and angrily threw the brown envelope at her.

"What is this? Another set of divorce documents from another lawyer?"

"Help yourself. You're nothing but a whore and a thief!" McCarthy angrily spat out.

Olivia's jaw dropped as her eyes met the pictures and a DNA test result. She couldn't cry nor speak.

She felt like the world was against her. The pictures showed her with another man. One of them depicted her with another man in a hotel, while the others were taken at restaurants and beaches.

The DNA results also proved that Olivia's recent pregnancy, which ended in tragedy, was not McCarthy's.

"Where did you get these? It could be someone else. I don't even know the man in the picture, please," she cried, trying to hold his hand, but he forcefully pushed her away onto the bed.

"Let go of me!"

"Don't hurt her, McCarthy!" his mother interrupted, holding his hand. "She'll sign the document. Leave that to me, please."

He stormed out and drove away.

"Now it's just you and me. If you don't sign this document, I will tell your parents how my missing ring ended up in your room and make sure the police get involved."

"I will tell my parents myself. I am not ready for a divorce after a three-year marriage. I love your son, please."

"And yet you cheat like a dog!"

Olivia ignored her remark, grabbed her car keys, and dashed out. She drove as if she were possessed, as if she wanted to end her life on the road.

But she had other plans. She drove straight to her parents' house, only to find it empty. She realized that her parents' home was being auctioned. "Where could they be without my knowledge?" She asked herself confusedly. She sat back in her car, devastated by the state of her life.

If she accepted the divorce, where would she go? This thought motivated her, but it was short-lived.

When Olivia returnd home, she couldn't believe her eyes. She was shocked when she saw her husband with his ex girlfriend in their matrimonial bed. The lady who nearly broke his heart?

"With all I've sacrificed, my family, my love and care...and...and my work. This is what I get in return?" She muttered, " if loving you was my mistake... " Her voiced ceased.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she stood motionless, watching how happy her husband was with another woman.
