Chapter 23: Hardworking Harley

Disguise technique, Jekyll originally thought it was such a mysterious skill, but he didn't expect Dinah to just do some light makeup to cover his pale complexion, then cover his conspicuous green hair with a baseball cap, and that's it.

"Like those movie special effects makeup artists who completely transform you into another person, I can do that too, but it's not necessary— we, superheroes or supervillains usually disguise ourselves to live under a different identity. If the makeup is too complicated and inconvenient, it defeats the purpose."

After dressing Jekyll up like an ordinary young man, Dinah also changed into a loose-fitting casual outfit. Compared to her usual attire of tight leather jackets and mini skirts, exuding a heroic and hot appearance, she now appeared a bit more girlish and cute.

"That's about it. But this is not secure enough. The most important thing is the final ace in the hole—"

Jekyll saw Dinah take out a small black suitcase, which made him curious—however, upon opening it, he was somewhat disappointed. Inside were not mysterious props like human skin masks, but just two pairs of seemingly ordinary glasses.

Seeing through Jekyll's thoughts, Dinah smiled without saying a word, then carefully put on one of the round-framed glasses.

In an instant, Jekyll felt something was off. Even though Diana had changed her style of dress and hairstyle before, Jekyll could still easily recognize her. But after putting on the glasses, Diana gave him the feeling of being a completely different person.

Her originally deep blue eyes turned into dark brown, and her sharp and imposing bird-like eyes now looked much rounder, completely resembling a soft and cute young girl— and it seemed there were other changes that Jekyll couldn't quite put into words.

"It's the pupillary distance. By adjusting the subtle differences in refraction, it's enough to completely change someone's appearance— these two pairs of glasses were custom-made by my parents, based on the advice of one of their former colleagues. Although that friend is world-famous, he can live an ordinary life under a different identity without being discovered, all thanks to a pair of specially made glasses."

Jekyll's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately thought of characters who switch identities with glasses, undoubtedly it was Clark Kent, Superman.

So, there's this trick as well. Originally, when Jekyll read comics, he used to mock the citizens of Metropolis as all blind, not recognizing Superman just because he wore glasses. But now it seemed he was too naive.

"Alright, let's go— stick your arm out."

Hearing Diana's strange request, Jekyll handed his arm to her in confusion. In the next moment, Diana affectionately hooked her arm through his, even though they were separated by loose clothing, he could still feel her soft touch.

"Let's go, darling, it's rare to have a trip to Gotham, we should go around more."

"D-Dinah, although we're already quite familiar, this seems a bit too—"

Hiss!

Jekyll sucked in a breath as his foot was forcefully stomped on, then he turned to see Dinah glaring at him with icy eyes.

"Stop beating around the bush. This is the role setting for our disguise, and it's also an important part of stealth disguise. Be smart, understand?"

Jekyll could only grit his teeth and nod reluctantly, then after a moment, he curiously asked in a low voice.

"This... Can I ask one more question, Dinah? Where did you learn all these disguise techniques?"

"I learned them from my parents. Is there a problem?"

"Um, I can tell... No, there's no problem at all."

Perhaps this is a disguise technique exclusive to couples, Jekyll thought to himself, but in order not to provoke Dinah's fiery temper, he decided to keep quiet.

Accompanied by Dinah, Jekyll finally set foot on the streets of Gotham for the first time since arriving in this world.

Unlike the central area of Gotham, where you could see towering skyscrapers and colorful neon lights at night, most of the buildings in the old city were only three or four stories high, and they looked somewhat run-down. The pedestrians and vehicles on the road were also relatively sparse.

If Jekyll were to describe it, he would say that while the central area of Gotham feels like a first-tier city, this place feels more like an urban village.

"Previously, this area was the industrial center of Gotham, very prosperous. But later, Wayne Enterprises led the transformation of Gotham's industries, replacing the traditional industries with low-pollution, highly automated high-tech manufacturing, so this area was gradually phased out."

Diana explained softly to Jekyll, who also noticed that most of the people he saw on the road were elderly people and children, while young adults were rare.

This is perhaps an inevitable process of urban development—Jekyll just casually sighed and didn't intend to delve into it too deeply. It's not his place to discuss city planning; he just wants to live a peaceful life now, leaving such matters to the city hall or Wayne Enterprises.

However, he was curious about where Dinah was taking him. She had mentioned meeting Harley Quinn, but the place they arrived at seemed to be a somewhat cheap-looking fast food chain.

"Welcome, would you like to dine in or take out?"

As they stepped inside, Jekyll understood Dinah's intention immediately.

Behind the counter, greeting them with a sweet smile in her casual attire, was none other than Harley Quinn.

Jekyll was about to say something when he felt Dinah tug at his sleeve, signaling him to stay quiet.

"We'll take a table for two."

Dinah's tone was completely different from usual.

"Of course, right this way, you two."

Harley seemed oblivious to their identities, warmly ushering them to a table—seemingly understaffed, she only managed to pour them some water before rushing off to attend to other customers without taking their orders.

Seeing Harley Quinn's friendly and busy demeanor, Jekyll found it hard to compare her with the mad and violent girl he knew.

"So, feeling a little guilty now, huh? While you've been idling at home, Harley here has been working hard to support you, and yet you still have doubts about her behind her back."

Faced with Dinah's merciless accusation, Jekyll had no rebuttal, feeling only guilt in his heart.

"I thought supervillains had other sources of income, but..."

In his impression, supervillains seemed to generally have no shortage of money—this was why he felt no guilt about living off Harley's earnings without working. But now, as Dinah pointed out, it seemed that wasn't always the case.

"Even though Harley has a Ph.D. in psychology, no one would hire a psychologist with a criminal record. And Harley has never committed crimes like robbery or kidnapping; she's even been repaying some of the debts the Joker left behind."

Dinah sighed softly, speaking with a hint of melancholy.

"Despite both Walker's and my families having money, Harley has never accepted our help. Do you really think someone as strong-willed as Harley would sell herself for money, you fool? Idiot! Blockhead! Trash!"

Being scolded by Dinah like this, Jekyll not only dared not retort but also felt increasingly burdened.

"So... whose profile picture was it, then?"

"It wasn't Gordon's profile picture. Only 'She' would use a flower as her profile picture and say cheesy things like that."

"She?"

Jekyll noticed Dinah using the female pronoun and raised his head in confusion.

"Don't worry, we'll find out when Harley finishes work. It's been a while since I've seen that woman too."

Ding dong.

The wind chime at the door rang again, followed by Harley Quinn's usual sweet voice.

"Welcome, are you here for dine-in or—what are you doing here at this time?"

Hearing Harley suddenly become cold, Jekyll couldn't help but turn around to see who had arrived.

He saw a middle-aged man in a gray coat with a small beard standing in front of Harley. Sensing the strange glances from other customers, he awkwardly adjusted his black-framed glasses.

"Sorry... Can I talk to you? I had no choice but to find you at this time."

Narrowing his eyes, Jekyll realized he had seen this man once—on the night he crossed over to this world.

What did Commissioner Gordon want with Harley Quinn?
