Cain's gaze shifted to the timer on his phone, a reminder of the need to measure his mana charge recovery rate. "Right, I need to determine how long it takes to replenish the lost charge," he muttered, his determination unwavering. With the timer set for five minutes, he assumed a lotus position, preparing himself for deep meditation.

Within a mere 40 seconds, the struggles and challenges of the previous day allowed Cain to slip effortlessly into a state of profound meditation. As his mind settled, a wave of tranquillity washed over him, enveloping his senses. Time seemed to lose its grasp as he delved deeper into the recesses of his consciousness.

After five minutes of serene meditation, the alarm on his phone pierced the air, signalling the end of his session. Opening his eyes, Cain gazed at the floating screen once more. To his satisfaction, the mana charge had been completely refilled. "So, does it replenish perfectly every five minutes or is it 3 minutes, maybe two minutes?" he mused, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "I won't disrupt deep meditation every two or three minutes just to restart the process, so 5 minutes should be fine."

Undeterred, Cain reset the timer to five minutes, conjuring another ethereal blade into existence. He launched it towards the wall with a resolute determination, watching as it effortlessly penetrated the surface before dissolving into thin air. He repeated this exercise seventeen more times, continuously refining his control and technique.

Although the repetitive practice tested his endurance, Cain persevered for a gruelling 90 minutes straight. Fatigue threatened to creep into his muscles, yet his determination remained unwavering. It was within these moments of unwavering dedication that he achieved a significant milestone—levelling up.

The floating screen shimmered into view, displaying his enhanced status:

[Name: Cain O'Brien]

[Level: 2 (0/150)]

[Spell-Points: 1]

[Mana-Charge: 2/2 (each spell requires a single charge unless specified; charges can be regained with meditation)]

[Spells:

Magic-Field: With a wave of your hand, you create a barrier of arcane energy to deflect ranged attacks, but it can only deflect 1 attack, rank 1 (1 spell point) Cost: 1 charge

Arcane-Blade: An ethereal blade is summoned and launched at high speeds against the target, rank 1 (1 spell point) Cost: 1 charge

Breathing heavily, Cain took a moment to absorb the magnitude of his achievement. The level-up came with surprises, a sense of accomplishment intertwining with a newfound strength pulsating through his veins.

Satisfied with his progress, Cain set aside the floating blade, its spectral form dissipating into the air. A sense of purpose filled his being as he prepared to embark on the next phase of his journey. With increased spell points and a replenished mana charge, he was eager to put his spells to use. The world of magic and thievery awaited him, ready to reveal its secrets as he ventured forth with unwavering determination.

Cain's smile widened as he contemplated his options. "Well, now I have the choice of using two spells simultaneously or casting the same spell twice," he mused, relishing in the newfound versatility. However, he soon found himself facing a dilemma.

"Hmm, now that I know how to increase my mana charges, the real question is whether I should enhance what I already have or acquire something new and potentially more useful," Cain pondered, his mind locked in a battle of choices. The weight of the decision hung in the air as he continued his grind, honing his skills and expanding his repertoire.

"Adding a new spell would only burden me further, considering I already possess a means of defense with the magic shield and an offensive option with the arcane blade," Cain thought, initially leaning towards improvement rather than novelty. But in a swift change of thought, he realized the significance of having an escape mechanism. "As a thief, a means of escape holds greater value than a means of attack," he concluded, his mind racing with possibilities.

Summoning the spell tree before him, Cain illuminated the next node, the glow of anticipation illuminating his eyes. "Please, an escape spell," he pleaded silently, his gaze fixed on the unlocking process. A triumphant ding filled the air, announcing his success in unlocking a new spell.
