Run Blake… Run

"Dad…" He mumbled, still in shock about the sudden turn of events.

It felt like it was only a second ago when they were chatting and laughing in the car, and now he was dead.

He turned his head away forward, feeling like his heart would explode if he kept on looking back.

His heart felt heavy and his eyes started to tear up, however, he didn't stop running, despite the increasing heaviness in his legs.

While one part of him wanted to simply fall to the ground and cry out his eyes, he knew that if he stopped; even if it was for a few seconds, the zombies would catch up to him and he would also get eaten by them.

The zombies were still chasing them, but they kept tripping on the sidewalk, giving he and his mother more time to get away from the horde.

After running for a few more minutes, they both stopped at an empty alley. They were exhausted after running from so many zombies, and they also needed time to go over everything that had happened today.

Sarah sat down slowly on the ground before gently resting her head on the wall.

Her skin was deathly pale and her breathing was very heavy.

Her expression was a rather complicated one, but her eyes were filled with so much sadness.

The image of her husband being grabbed and bitten by the zombies kept replaying in her head.

Her heart was heavy with the thought that she had betrayed him by not trying to fight back, but she also knew that she didn't have much of a choice anyway because she was powerless against those zombies.

Her intervention would have definitely killed all three of them, and all she could think of at that moment was to protect Blake from those zombies.

She was sure that her husband would have made the same decision.

She winced suddenly as she felt a stinging pain at the side of her chest.

A few moments ago, before they stopped at this alley, she had a very close brush with death. One of the zombies almost succeeded in grabbing her, but because of its slow speed and reaction, she was able to free herself from it.

Though, while the did free herself, one of the zombie's claws managed to leave a small scratch on her.

The stinging pain she was currently feeling was from that small scratch, she didn't know why it hurt this much.

Since it was only a small scratch, it shouldn't hurt this much. It was as if something was surging through her body, and it stemmed from that small scratch.

The pain suddenly spiked once more and she grunted again, this time loud enough for Blake to hear.

"Mom…" Blake, who was sitting beside her mumbled as he turned his head towards her.

It was now that he finally noticed her extremely pale appearance and heavy breathing.

Even he himself wasn't in the best of shapes with red and puffy eyes, everything that happened in the last few minutes had taken a huge toll on his mind and even he didn't know how he hadn't crumbled yet.

But seeing his mother now, he knew she was in a worse condition compared to him.

"Blake…" Sarah answered, but her voice was a little cracked and was more hoarse than normal.

"M-mom…"

"I-I'm sorry… I'm the one that's supposed to protect you… b-but instead, I'm just useless…." She mumbled.

Blake stared at her for a few seconds, not knowing what reply to give to her.

His mother's presence was the only thing keeping his mind from completely breaking down, he felt that at least he still had someone he loved by his side.

He found her words confusing… it wasn't like they chose to be thrown in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, so why was she making it seem like it was her fault.

"I've failed you… maybe I should have been the one eaten by that zombie. I'm sorry Blake…"

"I'm sorry…"

"I'm sorry…"

She kept repeating those words, with her voice cracking more and more with every sentence.

"M-mom…" Blake muttered, his voice breaking even more. Her actions scared him and he knew something was wrong, however, he had no idea what he was supposed to do.

She slowly brought her hands up to the sides of her head and started scratching it violently, roughening her hair.

"Mom!" Blake suddenly shouted with tears in his eyes.

Sarah suddenly paused at the sound of her son's voice, her brows squinted in confusion and she stopped scratching her hair.

She slowly withdrew her hands from her hair and stared at it with widened eyes.

Right in the middle of her fingers, were brown strands of hair that came from her own head.

She hurriedly closed her hands to hide the strands of hair from Blake, but that she didn't know was that Blake had already seen it.

The few seconds she used in staring at her hands were more than enough for him to notice it, however, he didn't say anything about it… or rather, he didn't want to and chose to simply ignore what he saw.

"I'm sorry, I should be the one comforting you and keeping you from breaking… but here I am… breaking." She said with her head face down.

Her head and mind felt muddled and it was as if everything was spinning rapidly. Even forming sentences were quite difficult, but she forced herself to speak, because this was something important that she had to say.

While Sarah wasn't sure what was happening to her, she had a guess… she was slowly turning into a zombie.

She didn't know how, but she guessed it was through the scratch from that zombie that she got infected.

At first, she didn't really think much of that scratch, after all, it was just a little scratch that was supposed to heal after a day at most. The keyword was "supposed".

But that little scratch turned out to be a big deal, she hadn't expected that one could turn into a zombie from a scratch, and even if she had, what were the chances that the same thing wouldn't have repeated itself?

Meanwhile, Blake was simply staring at her, glad that she had at least stopped acting strange and hurting herself.

However, the next words that she said, made him widen his eyes in surprise.

"You have to run Blake… run…"
